| Well, let's see, how did this all start again....ah yes- as a joke. Imagine that, us making a joke. When we were in about 8th or 9th grade(s), we kept hearing guys saying "I'm in a band" and somehow getting a response out of girls. So we thought, "Why not?" It would be funny- a bunch of guys who don't know how to play any instruments- with the exceptions of recorders and bongos- trying to make people think that we were a rock band. A few years later, some of us actually followed up on all the smack we had been talking- Nate, Dave, and Al signed up for guitar lessons at our chuch. Al quickly dropped out, Nate was making it there less and less often, but Dave made it a regular routine for himself. That following Christmas, Gary and Debbie (Dave's totally cool parents) bought him an acoustic guitar. That was pretty neat. We started thinking that maybe the whole band idea might happen. Later that spring, Dave- with nothing but right ideas- went out and bought his first electric guitar and a mini practice amp. That event was huge. After seeing him rock out on that thing, we decided it was time. Everyone chose- or had chosen for them- a piece of the band. The set up was: Dave and Nate on guitar, Dan as the singer, Kent playing the ceiling fan, Joe on the bass, and Al on the drums. Once everyone had their "assignment", we all bought our instruments. Joe's bass and Nate's guitar came from wonderful eBay and Al's drum set came from Nate who originally bought them from Main St. Music in thoughts that he wanted to be the drummer. Dan had a microphone from a little kareoke machine owned by Lisa and Dusty. For Kent, he had his choice of ceiling fans. In the beginning, there was much practicing. We would get together and say, "OK, now what?" Keep in mind that not of us really knew how to play anything. We mostly sat around playing songs individually because we had all learned different tunes. We decided that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana and "Santa Monica" by Everclear would be good songs to cover. Well, maybe we just liked those songs and wanted to hear them. Anyways, we butchered those songs to hell. After many terrible renditions, we started thinking that maybe we could make our own songs. Let me tell you, that's harder than it sounds. We would sit for hours and not get anything done, so again we would drift to other songs that we could cover individually. Since then, there has been much dissension. Nate decided baseball was more important than playing guitar, so he didn't play all that much anymore. Dan the singer has never really been Dan the singer. Even after Dave bought him a nice microphone for Christmas, Dan was still skeptical about singing in front of an audience- even us. The ceiling fan didn't quite produce any solos due to the fact that Kent enrolled into the the Air Force and we rarely see him. Al hasn't used his drum set since like 19Nam. He took lessons but seemes to have become tired of the idea of being a drummer. With years of experience behind him, Dave has played for the last two churches at which he has been a member, even taking the role of lead guitar every here and again at his new church. Joe kept on the bass after all this happened and also picked up the guitar. Like Dave, he started of acoustically and moved to the electrica. Sad to say, That Damn Sasquatch is almost just a dream at best now, but who knows what could happen. |
