There are many great shops in Pasadena.  Probably the best place to shop is Old Town Pasadena.  There are also a couple of good malls nearby.

Old Town Pasadena Historical District.
Bordered by Arroyo Parkway on the East, Pasadena Avenue on the West, Green Street on the South, and Union Street on the North.

A revitalized historical district with buildings dating from the late 1800s.  Tons of restaurants and shops.  Shopping includes: Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Illuminations, Restoration Hardware, Z Gallerie, Gap, J. Crew, Banana Republic, Esprit!, Urban Outfitters, Distant Lands Travel Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Rizzoli Books, Metropolitan Museum of Art store, Moby Disk, Penny Lane Records, and lots more.  For those with a more ecclectic-collectors taste, you can find lots of fun things at the Antique Mall.

South Lake Shopping District.
Lake Avenue stretching from Colorado in the North to California in the South.

An often-overlooked area of Pasadena.  Great for outdoor dining and strolls along tree-lined streets.  Shopping includes a huge Macy's, Eddie Bauer, Anne Taylor, Border's, Vroman's Museum Store, Blockbuster, Tower Records, Penny Lane Videos/DVDs, Bath & Body Works, Pier 1 Imports, Strouds, Webster's Hallmark, Williams-Sonoma, Pasadena Wine Merchants, and tons more.  There are a lot of good restaurants as well, including two Pasadena favorites: Burger Continental (which actually serves Middle Eastern food and has belly dancers) and Pie & Burger.

Further Afield:

Glendale Galleria.
[Website]
2148 Glendale Galleria.  Glendale, CA 91210.  About 10 minutes West of Pasadena on the 134 Freeway.

A huge mall featuring 5 major department stores and 250 specialty retail shops.  Coach, Bose, Games Workshop, FAO Schwartz, Gap (Adult, Kids, Baby), Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic, more. . . .  For those Northern Californians, "The Galleria" is comparable to Valley Fair.

Beverly Center.
[Review]
8500 Beverly Boulevard.  Beverly Hills, CA 90048.
About 35 minutes West of Pasadena on Beverly Blvd and La Cienega.

This is the mall of all malls!  With anchor stores Macy's and  Bloomingdales, and over 160 additional stores:
Rodeo Drive-type specialty shops and specialty shops like Williams-Sonoma, MAC, DKNY, BCBG, Kenneth Cole, Pottery-Barn and Bang-Olufsen.  Dining includes anchor-restaurants Hollywood Hard Rock Cafe, P.F. Chang's Chinese Bistro (famous for their lettuce wraps) and Gaucho Grill.  There's a lot of star-gazing here!

Melrose Ave.  [Website]
Between La Brea and Fairfax in Hollywood/Los Angeles area, 90046.

Multitudes of clothing, shoe and accessory shops line the north and south sides of the street for the "hip and happening."  A  hot spot for "L.A. Fashion."  This shopping area is similar to the Haight-Ashbury shopping area in S.F., only without fog, hills, and about a pound or two less trash.  Dining at one of the various sidewalk and patio cafes is also a treat.  Not to mention that there's a little star-gazing here too.  For those of you who were
"Beverly Hills, 90210" fans, you can find the building that housed Donna and Kelley's clothing store.
