Chronicle IconCapturing Text from Xcode

Capturing text allows you to extract code from existing Xcode text documents and place it into a Chronicle file, giving you the ability to easily build your archive of text and code while working on projects. Simply select the code you want to Capture into Chronicle as you're working in Xcode, and open the Chronicle Library. Then, Capture that text into a new or existing Chronicle file, as outlined in the topics below.

Capturing text from Xcode while viewing the Files List...

Text can be captured from the frontmost Xcode text document while viewing the File List.

Important: Begining in Chronicle version 0.9.5, the "Capture" item in the toolbar is no longer a popup button-style menu. It now behaves as a button, with the Capture menu available as a contextual menu for the button to provide added Capturing features.

To capture text while in the Files List, make sure there is an active Xcode text document. If you would like to capture only a portion of the Xcode text document, select the text you would like to capture. To perform a basic Capture operation (i.e. copy the selection of the frontmost Xcode text document) simply click the "Capture" button in the Chronicle toolbar. If you would like to customize the type of Capture operation you would like to perform, you can control-/right-click or click & hold the Capture button to pop up the Capture contextual menu, which provides access to all of the alternative capture types. If there is a qualifying text document open in Xcode, the desired capture operation will be performed.

Note: What Chronicle does with text once it has been captured is determined by your Preferences settings. Please see the topic Default behavior when Capturing text on the Preferences help page for more information about how Chronicle handles captured text.

Capturing text from Xcode while editing a file...

Capturing text while working in the built-in editor allows you to not only determine which file to capture into, but also where in the file to place the captured text.

Important: Begining in Chronicle version 0.9.5, the "Capture" item in the toolbar is no longer a popup button-style menu. It now behaves as a button, with the Capture menu available as a contextual menu for the button to provide added Capturing features.

To capture text while in the File Editor, make sure there is an active Xcode text document.

Unlike capturing text while viewing the Files List, the captured text is only applied to the file open in the Editor. The captured Xcode text is inserted into the current Chronicle file at the insertion point.
