Challenging Stereotypes! Is the main stream media�s obsession with the "New Asian Koool" and "Asian Underground" music merely a token interest, or has Asian Music finally crossed over into the mainstream? Bands like ADF, Joi, Fun<Da>Mental and Cornershop have been around for the past ten years and have pioneered and led the way for new talent. Acknowledgment has only come to light in past two years or so. Could this have anything to do with Madonna's Bindi and Mehndi phase?
Fashion by its very nature is temporary - it comes and goes. Is this the fate of British Asian music? We think not, because the second and third generation of British Asians can draw from both traditions to create something that is truly innovative and inspiring. |
