The scores on the left demonstrate my views on teaching as recorded by a teaching perspectives inventory found here.  There are five perspectives on "good teaching".  Most people display one or two dominant perspectives.  All of the perspectives represent contrasting views; however, people may resort to many of them in order to repond to different contexts in teaching.  A summary of these views may be found by clicking here.
My two top scores are "transmission" and "apprenticeship".  Upon reading some of the characteristics of the transmission view I can definately see where it diplays itself in my teaching.  I often state objectives of a lesson before the class begins.  I present lessons systematically for students to master, such as step by step lab activities.  I also summarize my lessons regularly.
My apprenticeship view is also present in my teacing.  This view contains some characteristics of constructivist theory such as guiding students when they need assistance and giving them more responsibility to work independently.  However, the apprenticeship view does begin with the teacher presenting information and designing lessons that are simple and become more complex.
Upon reflection, I do see myself in these two descriptions.  I always try to master the content that I am about to teach in order to answer questions that may arise.  I often feel inadequate when I can't anwer a question.  I feel that limited time to cover curriculum outcomes is one driving force behind my views and practices as a teacher.  We must cover the curriculum and still incorporate independant learning no matter how much time it takes.

"Growing up is about learning. The Net Generation are beginning to process information and learn differently than the boomers.... The destination is different and so is the route the kids must take.
Growing up digital (Tapscott 1996)"
I am ready to assist students on this different route of learning.  I have just begun my career as a teacher and hope to grow in my knowledge of teaching and learning in order to accomodate student's needs today.  The world for which we must prepare our students is rapidly changing.  By assessing my personal learning styles and teaching views, I may grow as a teacher.  The hard part is finding time to do the hands-on practical learning steps that are necessary when learning to use new software!  It is my view that my motivation to be a great teacher will drive me toward attaining these goals despite complications.
