The Solar System

Birth History

About 5,000 million years ago, a cloud of interstellar dust and gas began to come together under the effects of its own gravitational pull. This was the first step towards creating the Solar System.

The Sun was formed in its centre and the interstellar material began to condense into other celestial bodies, 'trapped' by the gravitational pull of the Sun. As the material condensed it was hit by meteorites and the early solar system began to form.

The solar system

The Earth is one of the nine planets which orbit the Sun, and these planets and their moons make up the solar system - the word solar means 'of the Sun'. The solar system also contains thousands of minor planets, called asteroids, and countless comets. The planets, asteroids and comets are all held in their orbits by the Sun's gravity, or pulling force.
