Chapter
13
It was 5:30 in the evening and I was
almost ready for dinner. I was sitting in front of my dresser mirror curling my
hair while Tony was lying on the bed watching tv.
“So where are you two
going?” Tony asked.
“Leonardo’s.”
“Of course. Why did I
ask?”
I just looked at him through the mirror, smiled and shook my head.
“Aren’t you tired of
going there? And it’s OUR restaurant, you know.”
“Me? Tired of Italian
food? What are you crazy?” I put my brush down on the dresser and sat at the
foot of the bed. Then I turned around to look at Tony and he just kept flipping
the channels without saying anything. He had this serious look on his face,
really concentrating on what was on the screen. I pouted my lips and gave him a
sad puppy face. He kept glancing at me, and then at the tv, and back at me
again. A little smile began to form in his lips.
“Jennifer you’re too
cute, you know that? I can never stay mad at you for even a few minutes!” he
said as he began crawling towards me. “You two go and have a good time. I don’t
care if you use our restaurant,” he said as he kissed my forehead.
“What, would you rather
have me and Ken go to another restaurant, where in the future I’ll be saying
‘This is me and Ken’s restaurant,’ instead of going to OUR restaurant, where it
will always be just ‘Jen and Tony’s restaurant?’”
He smiled and kissed my right cheek. “You’re right. Have fun! And don’t stay out
too late!”
I gathered everything I needed and went out the door. “See you later,
Tony!”
“I’ll be
waiting!”
I stood outside for a few minutes and Ken’s limo pulled up to the front to pick
me up and take us to Leonardo’s. During our dinner we talked about the movie
(promotions, video releases, premiere dates, etc.). It didn’t take us too long
before we got onto the subject of Christina.
“Okay Jennifer. I have a
feeling we’re both having problems with a certain somebody,” said Kenneth as he
sipped his drink.
“Me too. It’s about
Christina. You know, she’s been a hassle since the beginning. She keeps
insisting that I’m in love with you!”
“Yes well, it seems now
that she’s in love with ME.”
“I’ve told Tony all this
stuff about her, but I have a theory. It might sound a little strange, but it
could be true. Almost a year ago now, I first moved here to go to school at
Dundee. Tony and I met, and we started this secret relationship, you know. So
there was this woman named Nannette, she was the President’s secretary at
Dundee, and she was in love with Tony. So she did almost everything she could to
get him. I got in trouble with my family and had to go back home because
Nannette had written about me and Tony’s secret relationship in the school
paper. Tony then came to visit me in the U.S., and that woman followed! There
was this car chase, and she got into an accident, hospitalized, and went into a
coma.”
“Oh my,” said Kenneth.
“Carry on.”
“Well let me just put it
this way. I concluded that there’s a possibility that Christina is Nannette in
disguise.”
“What?!”
“Yeah because Tony wanted
the hospital to keep in touch with him in case anything happened to Nannette.
They called him one day and told him that she came out of the coma and had some
‘minor surgeries.’ So I thought ‘Come on now. Who else would go through all this
trouble just to annoy me?’”
“Hmm, that’s an
interesting theory. Now here’s my side of the story. She’s been getting a little
peculiar on me. She even asked me to sleep with her! I politely declined, of
course. It’s strange, because she told me she loved me, but she talked about
Tony a lot too.”
“Oh really? What does she
say about him?”
“She asks me if I’ve
talked to him since ‘Peter’s Friends,’ and I said yes. She said she’s a big fan
of his and wants to meet him, actually.”
“Too late for that now.
She’s already met him, but she told him she was Sarah instead of Christina!
Sneaky little thing … Do you know anything about her? Like where she came
from?”
“She said she’s from
Boise, Idaho and she went overseas to work as an assistant. She said she spent
Christmas over in the States recently."
“Overseas
where?”
“Scotland I
think.”
Now it was starting to fall together. An assistant, or in other words, maybe a
secretary. She’s a woman who came from the U.S. to work in Scotland, where
coincidentally, a man who she’s a big fan of, works. Then she supposedly went
back for Christmas. There was only one thing that was disturbing me about her:
she has the same profile as Nannette. She HAD to be her!
"What are you pondering there?" Kenneth asked me.
"I'm just wondering what to do next. Every time I try to confront her, she gets all defensive on me."
"You want me to fire her?"
"Oh no, you don't have to do that," I said with a little laugh. "But MAYBE...hmmm...I have an idea plotting in my head."
Kenneth started laughing and leaned back in his chair. "Oh? And what is this cunning plan of yours?"
"Why don't we do what Christina wants? Act like we're in love and make her go insane!"
"Well," Kenneth began. "That sounds interesting. Now how do you think this will go down with everybody else on the set? Rumors will start flying about the two of us--"
"You know what?" I interrupted. "Let's not worry about that right now. If my plan works, we'll explain everything to the world about what's been going on. What do you think? Think it'll work?"
"Don't you think that will be blowing this whole thing into proportion?"
"I don't care! I am not going through this whole 'jealous, crazed woman' thing again. Besides, I know YOU want her off your back, am I right?"
Ken quietly thought about it for a moment and rested his arms on the table. I stared at him with an eager look on my face, awaiting his answer.
"Alright, Jennifer. When do we start?"

It was almost 7pm when I got home and I found Tony sitting on the bed and talking on the phone. I changed into my pajamas and then joined him on the bed. As soon as I sat down, he ended his phone call.
"So, how was Ken--I mean, how was dinner?" Tony joked. I picked up my pillow and tried hitting him with it but he was quick to stop me."WELL, he was absolutely ADORABLE, oh my God you wouldn't believe!" I said excitedly as I sat Indian-style on the bed. "Man, what a night!"
Tony uneasily scratched behind his ear and nodded his head. "Oh…" was his reply. An elusive smile formed from my lips and I started shaking from holding my laughter in. Tony gave me a puzzled look.
"Aww hon you didn't really believe me, did you?" I said and started rubbing his leg. He shook his head and started laughing.
"Don't ever do that to me again, Jennifer! Yes! I actually believed you!"
"Oh come on. I thought you knew me better?"
"Obviously your acting talents have improved over the past few months!"
We laughed and I sat closer to him and he put his left arm around me. I stopped laughing once I realized what he had said.
"Hey...are you saying my acting sucked before?" I said almost angrily. Tony went silent once again. I then burst into laughter and he jumped on me and started tickling my sides.
"You're gonna get it now!" he shouted and continued torturing me.
"Wait! Wait! Seriously now! I need to tell you what we talked about tonight!" I managed to get out in between laughter.
"Later. I need to deal with YOU first!"
