Chapter 5
Later
that evening at what was supposedly dinnertime, Tony and I found a table and sat
by ourselves. There were tables set up all around the house and some people ate
outside, which is where Tony and I were. Earlier we walked around together to
meet some of the people that Tony knew but then we got tired of that soon
enough. Nobody really looked interested in us anyway, so we just stayed with
each other throughout most of the party. I looked around and noticed that
Kenneth was running around from table to table and inside and outside of the
house visiting as many tables as he could. He looked straight at me and started
walking towards our table.
"Hello you two!
How's the party going for you?" he asked and took a drink from the glass he
was carrying around with him.
"Eh, it's
alright. But, I must go off to the restroom. I'll be right back," said Tony
as he left the table with a smile.
"So,
Jennifer," said Kenneth as he sat down in Tony's chair, "Tony never
exactly explained your relation to him. Are you two..."
"Yeah Tony and I
are a couple. Actually, we're engaged to be married."
"Oh
congratulations! I would have never thought!"
"Yeah I know we
don't look exactly like the 'model couple' and we've been through so much crap
now from everybody about our relationship in the past few months. Finally
everything is going right."
"Love conquers all
for you two obviously."
"Exactly."
"How did you two
meet? If you don't mind me asking."
"Well first of
all, I was a huge fan of his while I was living in the U.S. Then I applied to
the University of Dundee, where Tony was the Rector. My first day there, Tony
came to visit me in my little apartment and we hit it off there. Then all this
weird stuff happened with this other woman who wouldn't leave us alone
and...Ugh, ya know what? I don't really wanna talk about her right
now."
"Oh it's okay!
Nobody should be in a downed mood at this party!"
He
smiled at me and I smiled back. I wonder what's taking Tony so long to get
back...
"So what are you
studying at the university?"
"History. It was
the only thing that I could find there that I was kind of good at. If only they
had theatre there, I'd go for that."
"Theatre, eh?
You're into the singing and dancing show business?"
"No, actually I
just wanted to be an actress. Okay here was my original plan. Move to
California, act in some plays, somehow get 'discovered' by some agent or
whatever, do some sitcoms, then movies, and become some famous actress. But not
TOO famous. Does that make sense? I don't want to be like Sharon Stone famous or
whatever."
"So you really
want to be a sitcom star?" (He laughs here.) "No, I'm kidding. I know
what you mean. Look, here comes Tony."
Kenneth got up from the chair as Tony came back to the table and resumed his
seat.
"Where have you
been?" I asked Tony.
"I went to the
restroom like I said I was and on the way back I ran into a few people and
chatted with them for a while. I ran into Emma while I was gone,
Kenneth."
"She's here?
Must have been running late. I think now would be my departure time. I'll go
find some other guests to entertain and I'll see you two again later, I
hope," said Kenneth as he raised his glass to us and turned around and
walked away.
"So what did you
two talk about while I was away?" asked Tony.
"I told him that
we're engaged, the story of how we met, and my dreams."
"Ooh, which
ones?" he asked with a little sly smile.
"Not about you,
Tony! The actress one. He seems really nice."
"Of course he
is."
Later on after everybody ate their dinner, the tables were moved, some music was
set and people began to dance in the dining room. Tony and I went inside the
house to the dining room to watch them dance. While we were there, I could see
Kenneth making his usual rounds talking to everybody throughout the house. A
slow song came on and Tony grabbed my hand.
"C'mon, luv.
Let's dance."
I
wasn't much of a dancer, actually, I had never slow danced in my entire life! I
was willing to give it a try. Tony and I went to the middle of the room and held
onto each other.
"Tony, I've
never slow danced in my life," I whispered to him.
"Really? Well
let's just move really slow and you'll get the hang of it. It's not that
hard."
I
really am a dork, aren't I? I never went to any dances or even parties in high
school so I didn't have any experience in this whatsoever. There's always a
first time for everything, and I sure was doing a lot of learning with Tony. I
rested my head on his shoulder and held on to him tightly.
