I was having my makeup done one day, and Christina was also in the room, getting my clothes ready.
"You know what I’ve been wondering?" she asked to nobody in particular.
"What’s that?" replied Sarah as she was doing my makeup.
"What type of woman Kenneth goes for. Maybe a woman with long, brown hair, green eyes, American…"
"In other words—you," I said and she looked at me through the mirror.
"Why not? It could happen, you know. Unless you think YOU’RE the woman for him."
What was with this woman? Why does she think I’ve got something for Kenneth?
"Christina, why do you always think that I have feelings for him? I already told you—"
"I know, I know. You’re engaged to Tony. But he’s not around, so do what you want!"
"I don’t WANT to do anything with Ken. And how did you know I was engaged to Tony? I never told you who I was engaged to."
"Oh, well, um, word gets around, you know. And why did you assume that I was talking about you wanting to do anything with Ken? It could be any guy on the set."
"Because you keep assuming that I’m in love with him!"
"She’s got you there, Christina," Sarah commented. I smiled up at her and Christina just shook her head, sighed and continued with her work.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I have to tell somebody about this. I decided to tell Tony first and ask him what I should do. We were lying on our bed; me on my stomach and Tony on his side, with his arm up to support his head.
"Tony, remember when you asked me about how work was going and I said it was going great?"
"Mm-hmm?"
"Well, I wasn’t completely honest about it."
"Jennifer, Jennifer. What’s going on?"
"The woman who is in charge of my clothes, Christina, keeps assuming that I’m in love with Kenneth, when I’m not."
"Why do you think she feels that way? Is it because you guys are always together in the movie?"
"I guess so. I’ve been trying to stay away from Ken as much as possible so she won’t say anything!"
"Oh well that’s not good. Just do what you have to and ignore this woman. The movie’s almost done now isn’t it?"
"Yeah, we’re almost done. And it’s been getting hard to ignore her. The other day we started arguing and she knew I was engaged to you, but I never told her that. I said I was engaged but not with whom."
"Maybe Ken told her."
"I don’t know, but she’s really irritating."
"What does she look like?"
"Why does that matter?"
"Okay well in a way I haven’t been honest with you either. You remember last Christmas, of course, with Nannette. While we were in the hospital, I asked the nurse there to keep me in touch with Nannette’s condition. I told her that we were really close friends, so it was important for me to know."
"What are you saying?"
"I did it for our sake, you know. Like what if she came out of the coma and tried to come after us again?"
"Yeah, that was a good idea."
"A short while after we came back here from the States, I got a call from that nurse at the hospital and she said that Nannette had come out of her coma and that she had some minor surgeries while she was there."
"Minor surgeries? Like what?"
"I don’t know. That’s all she told me."
I adjusted my pillow a little and rested my chin on it. Could it be possible that Christina actually IS Nannette? If that’s the case, she must really be screwed up in her head to go through all that trouble just to have Tony and I separated. Or maybe I’m looking into it too much. Christina could just be Christina, another annoying person I have to deal with.
"What are you thinking about?" Tony asked as he began playing with my hair.
"Just thinking about this whole situation. I have to tell Ken about it soon before it gets worse."
"Tell him tomorrow."
"That’s what I’m going
to do."
"Good. Now let’s go to sleep!" Tony laughed. I turned off the lights and we went under the covers.
