THE PHANTOM MENACE
The story begins more than 30
years before Luke, with his father, a nine year old, Anakin Skywalker.
During a politically unstable period in the galaxy, Anakin is to be trained
in the ways of the Jedi Knights, the elite spiritual warriors who represent
the future of good in the universe. Packed with lush new worlds, stranger
creatures, and intense new special effects.
Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam
Neeson) and apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) are sent to settle a
dispute between the planet and the Trade Federation. They flee the planet
with young Naboo Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) to the planet Tatooine
with the villainous Darth Maul (Ray Park) in pursuit. There, Qui-Gon Jinn
discovers a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who is
strong with the force. The highly anticipated film-which cost an estimated
$115 million-re-acquaints audiences with slightly younger versions of Yoda
and Jabba The Hutt, and a pair of familiar droids named R2-D2 and C-3PO. It
also introduces a Jedi elder Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson). There's an
underwater battle, lots of light-saber play, and a fast paced contest,
involving dragster-like 'pods'.
The Phantom Menace was nominated
for 3 Academy Awards, but did not win, in the following categories:
