The Wookiee homeworld

Kashyyyk has the odd distinction of being a world established in detail by George Lucas, but that has only been explored thus far in the expanded universe. During the development of the original Star Wars, Lucas had planned a journey to the Wookiee homeworld but the evolving storyline and budget realities kept the arboreal world from appearing on the big screen.

Nonetheless, Lucas' detailed notes about Wookiee ecology and culture became the springboard for a number of authors and artists who weren't limited by fiscal restraints -- any planet can be visited in a comic book, for instance, for the same costs. The Wookiee planet of Kashyyyk appeared in the Marvel run, the Star Wars daily newspaper strips, and even on television in "The Star Wars Holiday Special."

Finally, the Wookiee homeworld will be given the movie treatment in Episode III. "It's a tropical, but cool planet," describes Concept Design Supervisor Ryan Church. "The only real directive we got from George is that they live in giant trees."

In developing the look of Kashyyyk, the
Art Department first turned to the much-maligned 1978 television special to see what had come before. "We watched that on a loop about four or five times, avoided suicide, and went back to work," laughs Church. Though produced on a variety show scale, the Holiday Special's Wookiee world (then called Kazhyyyk -- pronounced, oddly, as 'Kazook') did have an establishing shot of a Wookiee domicile rendered as a painting by Ralph McQuarrie. The set built for the show -- the inside of Chewbacca's home -- was a mix of flashy sci-fi tech and carved-from-wood naturalism.

"We wanted to have a sort of high-tech Frank Lloyd Wright feel where the Wookiees incorporated the natural environments into their living conditions," says Church. "George was very specific about not wanting to see the same thing over and over again. We're visiting a lot of planets in Episode III, so when we cut to Kashyyyk really quickly, you have to know where you are."

The end result will be a single city on Kashyyyk that straddles several massive trees. Though other published sources have explored the thickest areas of jungle canopy, Episode III's location is on the shore of a tree-lined lagoon, offering greater visual dynamics and story potential

Fate has a major role in Revenge of the Sith

The last film in George Lucas' six-part saga of the Skywalker family inevitably ends in tragedy, the final prequel leading into the dark times of dictatorship that prevail at the opening of the original "Star Wars."

Figure that young Jedi Anakin has completed his transition to the dark side as villain Darth Vader, destroying the Jedi order and paving the way for the evil emperor to dash the democratic Republic. Jedi masters Obi-Wan and Yoda somehow wind up on the road to exile. Since she doesn't turn up in the original trilogy, Padme Amidala, Anakin's beloved, may end up a corpse.

Padme and Anakin's children, Luke and Leia -- who will appear as infants in "Episode III," Lucas says -- are separated to be raised unaware of each other's existence, the galaxy's two hopes for salvation when the original trilogy begins.

Timeline

Two years after Anakin's fall. The events in the final prequel take place a few years after the end of Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala are married, The Republic is at war with Count Dooku's Confederacy of Independent Systems, and Darth Sidious is preparing to make the final move that will ensure him control of the galaxy. With it's nearly endless supply of clone soldiers, the Republic is gaining ground against the Confederacy. Determined to avoid defeat, Dooku places a bounty on the Jedi Knights, who have already come under fire from the Republic itself. When Anakin turns to the Dark Side of the Force and joins the genocidal purge, Obi-Wan Kenobi must fight to protect Padme and her children as he heads toward a tragic showdown with his former pupil.

Samuel L. Jackson on dying:

Jackson knows only one thing about his character's fate. "I die in the next film. But I want to have a say in it," insists Jackson. "When I go, I don't want to get shot in the back by some bounty hunter-little Bobo twerp. When I go I, want to be facing him, and he has to be better than me."

Hayden Christensen on Darth Vader:

Christensen hedged at first when asked who was best at wielding a light saber. "That depends on who you ask." He finally added, "Me. I better be. I hunt all the Jedi down in the next episode."
Christensen said he also took advantage of his stay on Skywalker Ranch. "I snuck upstairs into the archives, and I tried on the (original) Darth Vader helmet. I even had a picture taken of me in my sweats wearing the helmet."

'All the bad guys win in the end'

"It's dark for 'Star Wars,' " Lucas said "Let's face it, all the bad guys win in the end, all the good guys are dead except for a couple. So it doesn't have a happy ending. I'm not sure how people are going to take it. It does have some fun in it. It's not completely bleak. But it's not an upper." Lucas is secretive about the details on how "Star Wars" arrives at its darkest hour. Even his principal do not know the specifics.

What has Lucas shared with them?

"Not a lot, other than I die," said Jackson, who plays Jedi elder Mace Windu. Portman, who plays Padme, expects there to be some ray of hope amid the chaos and calamity of Revenge of the Sith" to set the stage for Anakin's later redemption.

"I still think George has a really optimistic line in the thread of all of them," said Portman. "I don't necessarily think he has this dark outlook for the end of things, not like some apocalyptic vision. There's always this balance of hope. ... His movies are the antithesis of cynicism."

Christensen: 'Incredibly dark and destructive'

Christensen figures the final installment will end so darkly the film might have trouble getting a PG rating like its five predecessors.

"I think he will end almost on an apocalyptic note," Christensen said. "I just can't imagine it not being an incredibly dark and destructive film."

"You've got a war, and what we know from the previous trilogy, what my character does in wiping out the entire Jedi race, and the falling apart of my relationship with Obi-Wan."

Lucas on the droids memories:

"C-3POs memory system has been erased and so has R2's, so they don't remember anything from the first trilogy," he told E! News Daily. "I'm telling you something from Episode III, I shouldn't be telling you that but I think most of the fans already know that."
