According to several prominent geologists, the island of Agnost was formed by a series of violent volcanic eruptions about 200,000 years ago.  Almost all of the eruptions can be attributed directly to Mt. Kreo, which dominates the center of the island.  Kreo has been presumed to be completely inactive for several centuries now.

The island had few human inhabitants until the founding of the Republic.  Most visitors to the island did not remain long; the barren landscape was a forbidding obstacle.  Stories from older native countries include many mentions of pirates and smugglers using Agnost as a hideout, but no indication of any long term villages...
History of the Island
History of the Republic
The Republic was formed in 1950 by Thaddeus Silver, a professional adventurer and accomplished civil engineer.  Mr. Silver was determined to demonstrate the adaptability of humanity by establishing a self-sustaining colony in the Agnostian wasteland.  It took almost a decade of development, and over a thousand colonists from all over the globe to make Mr. Silver's dream a reality.  By the end of 1959, Agnost had finally passed from subsistence living into a growth economy.

Because of the vastly varied population that had settled in Agnost, the Republic was founded with a strong spirit of egalitarianism and social awareness.  Its socially progressive culture is generally held to be the major reason that the nation's immigration rate far exceeded its natural birth rate from 1960 - 1972.

The now Prime Minister Thaddeus Silver was slow to seek international recognition for his Republic.  Fearing the imperialistic tendencies of the superpowers and the aggressive nature of some of his neighbors, Silver instead chose to remain isolated, focusing on the island as a social and civil engineering experiment.  Architects, geologists, and engineers worked constantly at maximizing the limited living space of the island and preserving the shoreline.  By the time Thaddeus SIlver left office in 1980, the island was capable of holding its million residents comfortably, and the Engineering Corp promised that the island could easily hold ten to twenty million residents by the end of the milennium.

Today, Prime Minister Maximillian "Max" Silver, Thaddeus's grandson, and third PM of Agnost, continues to lead the island on domestic issues, but has also decided to bring the Republic into the international arena.  Agnost has recently became a member of the United Nations and is attempting to befriend its neighbors in the North Pacific
