Wildlife at Jaragun

Jaraguns

The name Jaragun is from the language of the Ngadjon people, describing the Orange Footed Scrub Fowl.   Our rainforest valley is filled with the calls of the Jaragun, although it's quite rare to see them.  They are shy birds which almost never emerge from the forest.  They are megapodes, related to scrub turkeys (which are also abundant in this area), and like them, build large mounds of leaf litter in which to incubate their eggs.  These mounds are common sights in the forest.  The male tends the nest, keeping the temperature finely tuned by adding or taking away mound material, until the chicks hatch.

They shoot the mosquitoes with 12-bores up here! No, no, it's just a dragonfly.

All Creatures Great and Small

As well as our namesake Jaraguns, the farm and surrounding forest abound with wildlife.
These are just a few of our fellow inhabitants.
