We moved into a building and all seemed fairly quiet to begin with. It's a big place that occupies two levels. There is the bathroom, kitchen and large living room on the first floor and the bedrooms and one W/C upstairs. It was a few months after moving in that the fun began, it started with funny creaking and clinking noises in the living room at night when I and my partner were alone and the children were in bed upstairs. We didn't think too much of it due to the abundance of 'natural' causes, such as temperature changes causing contraction in objects, something you will hear usually after turning your bedside light or television off.

This continued and then went a step further. While we lay awake in bed one night, both still awake but trying to get to sleep, we heard the main door downstairs close with its instantly recognisable thud (the door was subsequently kept locked at nights and the noise is no longer heard), proceeded by the sound of footsteps on the lower flight of stairs. Needless to say, nobody was on the stairs and nor could there have been as there is a second main door which leads to the streets which is always kept locked at night for obvious security reasons. The footsteps on the stairs are something which continued from time to time while we lay awake in bed, only the noise of the door closing had gone.
