As the English wrapped themselves tighter around Robert and his forces, he commanded his brother Nigel to take Isabel and his family back to Kildrummy so the ladies could try to get some much needed rest.

Sadly, this was not to happen.

The English were already near Kildrummy, ready to fight, and Nigel was determined to defend the castle. A supporter of Robert named the Earl of Atholl took lead over the women. The small group hurried north into the night toward the protection of the Orkney Islands. These islands were then held by Norway, a country that was a friend to Scotland. They would surely give refuge to Isabel and her companions from their foes.

Kildrummy Castle was eventually taken by the English. Nigel Bruce, a valiant knight and gracious protector of Scotland, was caught, hung, and beheaded.
