After the coronation, the need for more soldiers to support the campaign of Scotland's new king was imperative. The English would be swift with retribution, and Robert knew that his family would need extra protection.

Isabel, along with Robert’s Queen Elizabeth, daughter Marjorie, and sisters Mary and Christian, were sent to Kildrummy Castle under the protection of Nigel, King Robert’s youngest brother.

By July 1306, after suffering a defeat at Methven, Robert requested that Isabel and his family be brought back to him. King Edward I had declared that all wives of England’s enemies were to be considered fugitives against the Crown to be raped and murdered as seen fit. Robert would not let this happen, and wished to keep the ladies close under the watchful eyes of his men.
