Au revoir Bidding farewell is easy: au revoir applies to all circumstances. When more precision is required, use the expressions below. The word (such as in demain or bientt) always stands for "until" or "see you." A demain! See you tomorrow! A bientt! See you soon! A lundi! See you Monday! A la semaine prochaine! See you next week! A l'anne prochaine! See you next year! A plus tard! See you later! Note: In an informal context, "A plus tard" is often shortened: A plus! (pronounce: 'pluss') See you later! A la prochaine! (informal: stands for " la prochaine fois" or next time) See you next time! Practice How would you say goodbye to the following people? Match the English definitions with a French farewell statement. 1. You won't see Pierre until tomorrow. 2. You won't see Aline until Monday. 3. You won't see Jacques until next year. 4. You won't see Tom until next week. 5. You won't see Claire until later. 6. You won't see Anne until next time. 7. You hope to see Claude soon. a. A l'anne prochaine! b. A plus! c. A la prochaine! d. See you next week. A l'anne prochaine. Adieu! Adieu is the ultimate way to bid farewell in French. The word is very dramatic. It means "until God," and originally implied that one would never see the person again. But don't be surprised to hear the word when you travel the French countryside. Older French people still use adieu as a normal way to say goodbye. Un perro o una serpiente? Pedro and Luisa have always wanted to have a pet. One day, they find themselves looking around at a pet store. Pedro : Por qu no compramos una mascota? Luisa : No s... Son demasiado caras... Pedro : Un gato no es muy caro. Luisa : No me gustan los gatos. Son demasiado fros. Y los peces son demasiado aburridos. Y una mascota extica, como una serpiente? Pedro : Ay no! Las serpientes son demasiado peligrosas. Prefiero un loro o una tortuga. Luisa : Yo, la verdad, prefiero los perros. Y un perro lobo? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pedro : Why don't we buy a pet? Luisa : I don't know... They're too expensive... Pedro : A cat is not very expensive. Luisa : I don't like cats. Cats are too cold. And fish are too boring. How about an exotic pet, like a snake? Pedro : Oh, no! Snakes are too dangerous. I prefer a parrot or a turtle. Luisa : As for me, to tell you the truth, I prefer dogs. How about a German shepherd? Uses of Demasiado To say that something "is expensive", you say "es caro." To say that something "is very expensive," you say "es muy caro." To say that something "is too expensive," you say "es demasiado caro." "Demasiado" means "too", as in "too much," and it's usually followed by an adjective. Este perro es demasiado grande. This dog is too big. Las serpientes son demasiado caras. The snakes are too expensive. Note in the examples above that whereas the adjectives take the same form (gender/number) as the noun they accompany (el perro/grande; las serpientes/caras), the word demasiado does not change form when followed by an adjective. Los gatos son demasiado fros. Cats are too cold. Este loro extico es demasiado caro. This exotic parrot is too expensive. Esta tortuga es demasiado aburrida. This turtle is too boring. Practice What would you say in the following situations? Someone is trying to sell you a pet, but you have an objection to each animal. 1. First he suggests a dog, but you think dogs are too messy. Here's a list: el caniche poodle el dlmata dalmatian el perro lobo German shepherd (literally "wolf dog") el perro ovejero sheep dog el perro salchicha dachshund (literally "sausage dog") el sabueso bloodhound

Well, my dog Grover hardly ever barks, he never bites, and he does whatever I tell him to do. Anyway, cats scratch, and they don't do what you say. Julian : Tigger never scratches. She only meows when she wants attention and when she's hungry. I think cats are just too smart to do what people say. Harriet : Hmmph. That's what cat people always say.
