2nd Illo Tempore Film Awards - 1892  Nominations

(31st of March 2003) Louis Lumière makes his debut at the Illo Tempore Film Awards in full force, having his documentary about Prince Edward Sax-Coberg Gotha, Le Prince De Galles (The Prince Of Walles) leading the best picture category with five nominations.

The toughest contender is another French film, Pauvre Pierrot (Poor Pierrot), an animated feature directed by Emile Reynaud. The film has already secured an award by obtaining The International Award for the best production from France, a new category introduced at the 2nd edition of the awards.

The other French film, nominated for Best Picture, is Un Bon Bock (A Good Beer), another Emile Reynaud animated film. Gaston Paulin has already received the Best Composer Award for the music written for this production, a new category which was left uncompetitive.

United States follows with a worse year, compared to 1891, when it had an absolute domination over all the categories. The two pictures nominated for the top award are A Hand Shake and Wrestling, each with three awards. Wrestling, however, may have a great chance for the top award, particularly since it is nominated in two uncompetitive categories. It has already been given The International Award for the best production from USA, and brought William K.L. Dickson the first Best Producer Award, after he lost at the previous event to William Heise.

At the 2nd Illo Tempore Film Awards three new categories were introduced: Best Director, Best Composer and International Award - France.

The Best Director Award is disputed between two Frenchmen. Louis Lumière and Emile Reynaud are head to head, each coming with a different style and technique. Le Prince De Galles is a short film depicting the oldest son of Queen Victoria, a film which aspires to be a documentary; while Un Bon Bock is an animated film, extending almost for a quarter of an hour.

The other category where the two directors compete against each other is for Best Breakthrough, with the exception that Reynaud is nominated for Puavre Pierrot. They face competition from the composer Gaston Paulin, for the music written for Puavre Pierrot, and Edward Sax-Coberg Gotha (the first royal family member to be nominated) for his unintentional debut in film acting in Le Prince De Galles.

The future king of The United Kingdom has also secured a chance in the race for Best Actor, being nominated along with the two stars of A Hand Shake, William Heise and William K.L. Dickson.

William Heise was the last to receive an undisputed nomination for Best Cinematographer, for the work done in Fencing, the only production not to be nominated for Best Picture. As a result he receives a second Award for cinematography, becoming the only individual to retain victory in a category.

The 2nd Illo Tempore Film Awards winners are to be announced on the 29th of April. The winners of The Illo Tempore Tribute, the Achievement Awards and the Merit Prizes will be announced on the 19th of April.
