Diary Week Six
Day 36
|
Thursday, 26th August, 2004After getting up and visiting the supermarket for a bite to eat (all I could afford unfortunately), I went for a long walk to the other side of the bay, past Plaza Las Malvinas and towards the old Christian Mission. The views from the other side of the bay were spectacular, with the town in the foreground and the mountains behind, especially with the sea there as well. One problem is that with the weather getting milder (sunshine!) the snow was melting quickly and the slush was getting everywhere. Cue soaking wet jeans and trainers. Glastonbury 97 all over again! I took a load of photos of different bits and pieces, including a memorial to Galician Spanish settlers in the area. Unfortunately, my museum for the day was closed due to a heating failure, which was frustrating. Luckily, though, I found another museum to visit - the former Governors House which also included an art exhibition alongside explaining the history of the building and the small debating chamber. Not as exciting as the other museums, but interesting in its own way. That kind of left me running out of things to do in Ushuaia, so just after four I packed my bags up and went down to find a taxi to the airport. I got there more than two hours before the flight and found nothing open and all of the staff watching the basketball semi-final. So, I just sat there, finally got round to reading my Cortazar novel and got on the plane. I managed to convince the stewards that I had booked a vegetarian meal (well, I had!) so they went off to find it. I suspect they had forgotten judging by the hastily prepared sarnies I ended up with. Off the plane, bags from the hold, and straight out to the taxi rank where a Mr James took me speeding from the airport back to home. Straight to bed after a nice holiday. Can sort the travellers cheques etc. tomorrow!
