The Digimon Emperor
 Digimon Emperor/Digimon Kaiser
- Ah, the strange affair of the Digimon Emperor. How do you turn an apparently normal boy into an arrogant, hateful dictator? How do you suddenly become so uncaring and hateful to the feelings of others- even your own parents? But I'm getting ahead of myself. To answer your question:
Who is the Digmon Kaiser?
The Digimon Kaiser is one Ken Ichijouji in an 80's style costume complete with whip, sunglasses, and crazy hair(dubbed by some of his fans as 'the Pimperor'). He is the major villian during the first half of Digimon Adventure 02. The Kaiser enjoys torturing digimon and watching them fight against each other, much like watching cock fights. Aside from his entertainment, he used the digimon under his power as slaves and means of transportation. They were controlled by dark rings and dark spirals that wrap around a digimon's neck/horns/arms. Once they get hooked, they lose all control over their bodies.

The rings can't work by themselves however. They require a Dark Tower/Control Spire which works much like a radio tower, which in turn broadcasts the energy from Ken's black D3. An interesting side effect of these buildings is that in the areas under their control, digimon cannot digivolve normally. In order for the Digidestined to fight the Kaiser ment that they had to find an alterior way of digivolving- by digiarmor evolving. Aside from the Dark Towers, the Kaiser also dabbled in genetics. He attempted to create a digimon using body parts of others, so that he could create a the perfect slave without soul or mind- a monster who would listen to his command and his command alone. He succeeded, but his monster was not without fault. The beast he created was known as Chimeramon/Kimeramon.
Interestingly enough, Kimeramon is a pre-evolution of Millenumon, whom Ken defeated years ago with Ryo.
His Creation
So how does one become so horrid? Surely it doesn't happen overnight.... or does it? Some say it's Schizophrenia, while others believe there was an evil force controlling the movements of our beloved Ken. There are many contributing factors to this phenomena, so let's lay out what we know. As a child, Ken felt neglected compared to his older brother Sam. Sam was known for being very intelligent and his parents were very proud of him. Ken however, did not have any outstanding talents that made the neighbors or his parents take notice.

We also know that Ken holds the crest of Kindness. A crest in the digital world signifies the bearer's greatest attribute, and Ken is the only one of the 02 cast to recieve one. Kindness is a rare and vulnerable thing. Wormmon knew this and warned Ken to be strong against those who would use him for their own intentions. However very soon afterward, Ken was struck by a dark spore that implanted itself into the back of Ken's neck. He fell ill for 3 weeks where Wormmon cared for him, then returned to the real world. (There was still a time difference back then, so he returned almost the exact time he left.)

There's alot of mystery surrounding the spores. These strange seeds, when implanted, cause the host to become almost super human. It's because of them Ken became a super genius and a star athlete (his looks are natural of course). He also recieved the ideas for the Dark Towers through these spores. We know that they came from Milleniumon, and that Oikaiwa, Daemon (a represenative from the Dark Ocean), and Myotismon all had different intentions for these seeds. Perhaps it's best to say that they were created to feed on evil desires of those in the real world, and after a certain time when they had grown well enough, these plants held enough dark power to grant its bearers access to different realities. We know this to be true because Ken was fully aware of the Dark Ocean, and could open portals to it at will.
Fortunatly for the Dark Spore, young Ken was a perfect growing ground of insecurity, jealousy, and frustration. Upon the death of his brother, Ken was overcome with remorse for ever hating Sam. So much so that he became vulnerable to the evil he had been told to defend himself against. At the funeral, Ken was observed for the first time by Oikawa, who at that time was under the influence of Myotismon. Oikawa sent him an email urging him to use 'his brother's digivice' and enter the digital world. The spore took him to the Dark Ocean instead, and there he lost all control of his good side to darkness.

It should also be noted that since the Digidestined's clothing changes as they enter and leave the digital world based on their personalities, however Ken's digital attire and hair make him look uncannily like his brother. It's not certain why this happens, perhaps it's because of Ken's desire to be like his brother, or perhaps Sam was more involved with the digital world than we are let on to know. I don't suppose we'll ever find out.

His Defeat
While Ken was lost in his darkness, the goodness he had left behind was always there trying to reach him. The most obvious of course is Wormmon, who was always at his side. Good natured and kind, wormmon disliked what the Kaiser was doing yet remained incredibly loyal to him. Suffering the kicks and hateful comments of the Emperor, wormmon still believed that Ken could be changed.... until that fateful day.

The digidestined had made it to the Kaiser's flying base, intent on destroying it. Around this time Ken began to hear strange voices in his head from the Dark Ocean and was very troubled- almost like a mad man. Wormmon became very worried for him. As Davis made his way to the power core, wormmon caught up with him and showed him the digiegg of miracles (which was the crest of kindness in disguise) that Ken had been using to power his base, at which point Veemon digivolved into Magnamon. Although he was strong, Magnamon was still not powerful enough to take down Kimeramon.
The flying base, having been damaged and without it's power source, crashed into the ground. The Kaiser made his get away with wormmon on one of his more evil looking flying slaves. Wormmon tried to reason with him, but Ken was not to be reasoned with at the moment and whipped him. Tears rolling down his cheeks, wormmon had finally had enough. He knocked Ken off the digimon into the sand, and gave his entire life-force to Magnamon who then was finally strong enough to defeat Kimeramon.
After his total defeat by the digidestined, Ken lay in the dirt angrily vowing to reset the digital world so he could start over. The digidestined disagreed with him, and told him that the digital world wasn't a game and that the digimon were real. Ken suddenly had a flashback to the soccer game where he remembered seeing thier digimon. Suddenly his darkness that clouded his eyes shattered, and he began to tear off his Emperor outfit (which instantly vanished). Over come with shame and guilt, he covered his face and fell to the ground. Only one thing could make him look up from his sorrow, and that was Wormmon. On the verge of death, Ken cradled wormmon in his arms and apoligized for all the bad things he had done. Unfortunatly, his pleas that wormmon should stay with him were in vain as wormmon died there in his arms.

A very sad and torn Ken made his way home and spent the next few days barely speaking or eating, searching his soul for his heart. He eventually finds it again in a digimon nursery.
