The Dark Ocean

What is the Dark Ocean exactly?

What the Dark Ocean is exactly, is another parallel world that runs closely with our own and the digital world. It is ruled by Dagomon, a massive and terrible monster of darkness. This world's greatest feature is the dark, grey body of water and beach that very closely resemble an ocean. It is not how it seems, as the water is dark and channels a great evil. Even the sky and land have lost any color that they should have and the very air has an evil chill.
Digidestined (and perhaps digimon as well) are inexplicably drawn to this world if their mind becomes clouded with dark thoughts. Ken was accidentally drawn into the dark ocean when originally was headed to the digital world. Kari was forcibly pulled there by 'the digital deep ones', most likely because she was the holder of the crest of light (yin and yang I suppose). The Dark Ocean is almost unbearably forceful to those who are mentally weak or sensitive. In their second visit to the dark ocean, Ken and Kari could barely stand up when attacked by the darkness and both were in a mental state of torture.

So what is the purpose of Dagomon in the story?

It hasn't been specifically said why Dagomon is in Digimon, but we can make some reasonable conclusions as to his existence. Dagomon's appearance is based off of the fertility deity, Dagon, in the tales of Cthulu by H. P. Lovecraft. His history preceeds even Lovecraft's works however, as Dagon is mentioned in the Bible itself. In the tales of Cthulu, his minons were the 'Deep Ones' whom many fans believe are portrayed by the ex-divermon.
The Dark Ocean itself serves as more of a Hell in the story of Digimon. Dagomon was never ment to be defeated or serve as a major villain in the story, his only purpose was to be a 'yang' to the rest of the worlds. In that light, it makes what Ken and Kari went through that much more meaningful. Kari is like an angel, yet made of flesh and blood and still succeptable to evil. It also shows just how far deep Ken was in when he gave into the darkness. In a sense, Ken and Kari are both very alike. Innocence, gentleness... however, Kari lucky enough to have friends who were her lifeline against the evils of the ocean. Ken did not sadly, and he soon found himself ingulfed in that terrible deep darkness.

Just how involved is Ken with the Dark Ocean?

One of the most mysterious things in the story is Ken's involvement with the Dark Ocean. The Digital Deep Ones who pulled Kari into the dark ocean were full aware of Ken as the digimon emperor and wanted to 1.)worship him, or 2.)rebel against him (translations vary). It's strange as to why servants of Dagomon would be interested in Ken, even if he was the Kaiser.
As Tk and Kari discovered, the lighthouse was a disguise for a conrol spire and when they distroyed it, the deep ones reverted back into their original forms. It was later revealed that the deep ones' dark rings were fake however. So what was the purpose of the control spire? Why build one in a land where there is no free will in the first place? Arukenimon later reveals that the control spires were "presents from the dark ocean" to keep Ken occupied. It's possible that the control spire wasn't actually disguised as a lighthouse, but inactuality WAS a kind of lighthouse that broadcast a dark aura, much like the control spires in the digital world did with Ken's dark digivice (which did originate in the Dark Ocean).
I do believe that Ken was being manipulated by the darkness like a puppet. As the Kaiser, he arrogantly believed that he was powerful and undefeatable, but in reality he was granted power from the Ocean. (You also conclude that he recieved his arrogance and pride along with his super human talents, as these are decidedly sinful traits that clouded his eyes from his own actions. If you remember back to the episode where they had to destroy the reactor in his base, it let off this evil aura which Ken said had surrounded him ever since he entered the Digital World.) Of course this is why the voice he heard was laughing at him when he began to think he ruled all aspects of the world, including the darkness. It was like if a puppet began calling himself the puppetmaster.

I'm certain after Ken had controlled enough of the digital world that he would have either been killed or enslaved by the evil forces. Dagomon would have then easily ruled the digital world and eventually turned it into a wasteland much like the Dark Ocean. Of course though, Ken isn't the only one in the story who was misguided. Oikawa was also duped by Myotismon who entered his body and influenced his actions, much like Ken and his dark spore. In turn, Oikawa sought out Ken and gave him that final push into the darness. He believed that the control spires were a way for him to travel to the digital world, and unlike Ken who was naiive at the time, Oikawa was extremely desparate and would believe any voice of hope he heard. Unfortunatly for him, Myotismon was very alive and very evil, and in the end his desire to go to the digital world by any means necessary was the very destruction of him.

The purpose of the Dark Ocean

Having said all that above, we can conclude that the Dark Ocean's purpose in the story was simply to add depth to the story of Good vs Evil. Think of it as turning on a lamp and seeing the shadows. The digidestined will always have to fight off what may come from that dark land, probably even genarations after Ken is gone. In a sense though if we had not been introduced into this world, they would not have known about the existence of other worlds as well. The future of the entire human and digital universe may have just been broadened because of it, and our own imaginations are left to merely guess at the possibilities.
