        Hammerlock: The H.o.S. Interview

Uncle Dan:
Hammerlock has a well-documented love for and friendship with Rancid Vat main man/writer extrordinaire Thee Whiskey Rebel. Taking that into account, how special was it for y'all to do the Hammerlock/Rancid Vat split?

Liza Kenney: It was a big honor.

Travis Kenney: It was great. We always talked about doing a split 7" and to do it with Rancid Vat was great. Plus, it tied in with Thee Whiskey Rebel's book debut.

UD:
Your association with the Confederacy of Scum is well known, too. However, for those who might not know, could you explain what the C.o.S. is all about? How did you first come into contact with these bands? What ultimately led to you becoming part of the C.o.S.?

L: The C.o.S. is a group of bands that stick together like a family. We're bad--we are nationwide!

T: Well, Thee Whiskey Rebel introduced us to the C.o.S. but I had been an Antiseen fan for years and had been recently exposed to Cocknoose beacuse of the Antiseen connection. Anyway, Whiskey Rebel turned us on to the rest of the C.o.S. and of course the Philly lineup of Rancid Vat (we had previously heard the west coast Rancid Vat). We loved all the bands. Then, he asked us to play the 1999 Philly supershow. We pulled a rabbit out of a hat, got tickets, and flew out there to play it. We also played the 2000 supershow in South Carolina. Then, at the 2001 supershow in Austin, Texas, we were inducted into the C.o.S.

UD:
On the Venom tribute split Hammerlock did with Limecell, the band expanded to five members. Who are Skippy and Tim Green? Why did Travis not play guitar on the cut, lending only background vocals? Any words of reverence you'd like to share about Venom?

T: Well, Tim Green plays guitar in an instrumental band called the Fucking Champs and, if you have ever heard them, you know he is in league with Yngwie Malmsteen. So, I thought he might do a better job than me on a Venom tribute. Skippy is Jeff Skipski, who started Baloney Shrapnel records, and he said he wanted to sing on the last Baloney Shrapnel release. So, he came up from Pheonix, Arizona and we recorded it. The first time we met in early 1999, we had talked about how we were both big Venom fans.

UD:
Could you give a glimpse into some of the fun to be had at the Confederacy of Scum supershows? Any highlights from past shows?

L: It's a great time seeing and hanging out with all the bands--seeing all the new records/CDs that they've done, new merch; stuff like that. The grand finale at the end when Antiseen plays "TCB" and everyone gets up on stage to sing it with them is a definite highlight, as well! The one thing I look forward to is finding the good food wherever the supershow is that year--in Philly we had cheesesteaks, in South Carolina there was Bojangles sweet tea, in Texas there was Stubbs barbeque, and in Las Vegas there was all-you-can-eat joints and five dollar prime rib dinners.

T: You just got to go to one to understand it--best show of the year, every year.

UD:
Any plans for Hammerlock to tour the U.S. abroad in the near future? If so, any Southern dates being planned (hint, hint)?

L: We're in the process of setting things up within the next few months.

T: Right now, we are hammering out some east cost dates for 2004--check www.hammerlock.net for updates.

Mikey Kingshill: I want to travel and play as much as we can.
