         Hammerlock: The H.o.S. Interview

Uncle Dan:
First of all, I'd like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to sit down for this chat. I assume while things are hectic, they must also be exciting with this new album coming out?

Liza Kenney: Well, you're welcome. Two more weeks and #4 will be here--I am very excited about it! Larry and Leslie from Steel Cage have done an excellent job on the mastering and art work! They have made sure everything has been done correctly, down to editing our mistakes on the lyrics page--we spelled things wrong and left out words, so they found those mistakes and fixed them for us! What better care could a band get from their record label? Thanks Larry and Leslie!

Travis Kenney: I can't wait--definitely our best release to date.

UD:
Since the last album, Hammerlock has seen a lineup change at the drum throne. On behalf of all Hammerlock fanatics, welcome Mikey! How did you hook up with the band?

Mikey Kingshill: A few years ago, a buddy of mine took me to see the band. After that, I tried to make every show. I heard they were having problems with their old drummer, so I played a few songs with them one night and things worked out.

T: Mikey kicks ass, the old guy sucked--what would you do?

L: Mikey wanted to play with us and he was a way better drummer than the last guy. He loves Hammerlock. What more could we want?

UD:
Given the instability of the drum slot in Hammerlock over the years, how afraid are y'all of Mikey spontaneously combusting in mid-gig, a la Spinal Tap?

L: Um, I never watched Spinal Tap.

T: Naw, Mikey is solid as a rock. He is our third and last drummer. I can see no future problems--with exploding or anything else.

UD:
How were the recording sessions for this new album? Were they smooth and enjoyable or did it take some extra negotiating to get everything down just the way you wanted it?

L: There was no extra negotiating, no problems--it went smooth as molasses!

M: I think it went good. Considering we were so rushed, Tim got a good sound out of us and everything else went pretty quick.

UD:
There was a message on the Hammerlock site saying this new material is more country where it's country and more rocking on the rockers. How so? Was there a conscious effort on your part to make things this way or all just the result of natural flow?

L: I think that we just finally have a drummer who knows how to play his drums, so the songs are gonna be what they should be.

T: In addition to that, I think the more you listen to different styles the more you learn their subtleties and are able to define them. I feel that over the years me and Liza have become more musically literate and that allows you to make things sound more like the song you originally had in your head when you wrote it. Add Mikey's ability to play different styles and you get a much more interesting album.

M: I would say it's just natural flow. The rocking parts are so heavy it makes you wanna play with everything you got and the slow stuff makes you wanna listen and understand it. The three of us have great chemistry.
