      FORMER TEACHER, DEPUTY SHERIFF
                 DIES HERE AT 82

Samuel Tilden Hourigan, 82 year old retired farmer and one time deputy sheriff of Marion County, died at 12:45 pm Sunday at his home on Chandler Street after a few day's illness of bronchial pneumonia.  A native of Missouri, son of James Patrick and Grace Ann Johnson Hourigan, he long had made his home in Marion County.  A former resident of Gravel Switch, he had been a member of Beech Fork Baptist Church since early manhood, and for 60 years was affiliated with T. W. Wash Monsonic Lodge.  He taught in the county school system for 16 years and later served four years as a deputy sheriff.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie L. Powars Hourigan; six daughters, Mrs. George Borders and Mrs. William Mann, Lebanon;
Mrs. Jesse Greer, LaGrange; Mrs. Charles Logsdon, Gravel Switch; Mrs. William Whitehouse, Danville, and Mrs. DeWayne Baker, Cincinnati; four sons, Tilden Hourigan, Gravel Switch; Cleaver and Jesse Hourigan, Lebanon, and Rufus Hourigan, Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Robert Gray, Danville; 36 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  Another daughter, Miss Martha Hourigan is deceased, as are six brothers and a sister.  The body was at Bosley Funeral Home until 2 pm Tuesday when funeral services were held at Beechfork Church.  Burial was in Haysville Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Paul, Gray, Henry, Bonta, R. B., Wilson, Pete, and A. J. Hourigan.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Mr. Sam Hourigan who died Sunday at his home in Lebanon.  He made his home here before his retirement a few years ago.

Mrs. Hourigan Dies of Cancer

Mrs. Mattie L. Hourigan, 83, died of cancer at 12:15 am Friday, January 21, 1872, at Cedars of Lebanon Rest Home, where she had been a resident for about a week.  A native of Marion County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Nannie Hayes Powars, and she was the widow of Samuel T. Hourgian, Sr.  Survivors include four sons, Tilden, Cleaver and Jessie Hourigan of Lebanon and William R. Hourigan, Bowling Green; six daughters, Mrs. Paul Mills, Lebanon, Mrs. Charlie Logsdon, Gravel Switch,
Mrs. Jessie Greer of Paris, Ky., Mrs. Clell Warren, Campbellsville, and Mrs. William Whitehouse and Mrs. DeWayne Baker, Danville; a sister, Mrs. Vania Boswell, and brother, Alvert Powars, both of Danville; 43 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  The funeral was conducted at 2 pm Sunday at Woodlawn Baptist Church by the pastor, the Rev. W. A. Clutts, and the Rev. Herman Rowlett of Louisville.  Burial was in Haysville Cemetery.  Bosley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Pallbearers were Billy Borders, Gerald Green, Bobby and Richard Hourigan, Charles Logsdon, William Donald Whitehouse, Charles Orberson, Bill Mann and Tommy Baker.
