HOURIGAN, WILLIAM R., 77, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Hospice of Louisville. He was a deacon and member of Walnut Street Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He served on numerous boards and directorships relating to health care, including the Kentucky and National Board of Licensure for Nursing Home Administrators, the Kentucky and National League for Nursing, and Barren River Area Development District Health Manpower Council. He served as Commissioner of Health Economics Control in Kentucky from 1988-1991. Civic affiliations included the Salvation Army Board, Rotary International, Bowling Green Human Rights Commission, Big Brothers, Shriners and Masons. Dr. Hourigan received his BS and MS from the University of Kentucky, and PhD from Ohio State University. He joined Western Kentucky University in 1960 where he served as professor and Dean until 1997. He received special recognition for his work in higher education by being listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and University Administration," "Who's Who for Biologists and Chemists," and "Who's Who in American Education." His advocacy for higher education touched many students across the country. While at WKU, Dr. Hourigan helped charter and served as advisor to the Kentucky Beta chapter of Sigman Alpha Epsilon. He served as Archon of Province Iota and was a recipient of the Merit Key Award.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mattie Hourigan; three brothers; and five sisters. He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Marlene Swann Hourigan; sons, Jeffrey Scott (Penny) and Jon Stuart (Andrea); daughter, Leah Barnes (Harvey); and three granddaughters, Jeanie and Emma Barnes and Riley Hourigan; two sisters, Gertrude Baker of Danville, KY, and Carol Becker of Campbellsville, KY; two sisters-in- law, Frances and Naomi Hourigan of Lebanon, KY; and many nieces and nephews. He is remembered by his family and friends for his love of Christ. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at Walnut Street Baptist Church. Internment will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in Hayesville Cemetery in Lebanon, KY. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Arch L. Heady Funeral Home at 7410 Westport Road, and also from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Walnut Street Baptist Church prior to the funeral service. LOUISVILLE � William R. Hourigan, 77, of Louisville died at May 27, 2006, at Hospice of Louisville.   The Marion County native was a professor and dean at Western Kentucky University from 1960 to 1997, helping charter and advise the Kentucky Beta chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and a deacon and member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville. He earned bachelor�s and master�s degrees from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
