        Lectures

How often do you have lectures in Queensland University of Technology (QUT)?

Every morning on weekdays.

What courses did you take?

Professional Studies and Sociolinguistics.

Who were the lecturers?

Jennifer, who is energetic, humorous and professional, taught us Professional Studies. Jo, who is kind and nice, taught us Sociolinguistics.

This is Jennifer.                              This is Jo.

In what ways, the lectures were held?

We did not just sit and listen. We were expected to volunteer to ask and answer questions. It was also enjoyable to have group sharing, discussions and presentations.

Can you briefly tell us what did you learn in these courses?

In Sociolinguistics, we learnt how different cultures and other contexts influence communication and language development. In Professional Studies, we gained insight about the Australia education system and curriculum. The lectures prepared us to visit local schools and have successful teaching practicum.

External Experience in Brisbane

Australia is a multi-cultural country where there are many students whose first language is not English. In order to help these students to cope with their studies and daily life, the Education Queensland (EQ) has put in many resources and many of the state high schools in Brisbane have an ESL unit.

In the STEP Programme 2002, HKU BEd students had a chance to observe and teach in some of the state high schools as an ESL. The followings are the schools at which we taught:
