Police Officer of the Year Award

RYLA

Projects completed this (Rotary) year.

Mortlake College Work Experience Program.

This program is aimed at giving year 10 students from a rural background work experience that is not available in their local area.  This year 5 students came from Mortlake Secondary College, were home hosted with club Rotarians and worked for a week at a variety of placements organised by club Rotarians.  The students also attended the Wednesday morning meeting, spoke a little about their experiences and answered questions.  The program has been very successful, both for the students and for the club, and we look forward to the next exchange with Mortlake Secondary College next year.

Projects underway or in planning.

Police Officer of the Year Award.

This is an annual award that the club organises with the support of the Victoria Police,  the Geelong Council, and the principal sponsor Bendigo Bank.  The purpose of the award is to recognise efforts and contributions made by the members of the police force, above and beyond the call of duty.  Nominations come from the public, and the winner receives the award at a civic function and is reported in the media.  The award is a way to present the police force in a positive light, as much publicity and interaction that involves the police concerns difficult situations.

The award has been running for 10 years, and has had number of worthy winners.  Recipients of the award receive a cheque for $500 to be donated to a charity of their choice.

Workplace Visits.

The Committee organises workplace visits to club members places of employment, as regular club meetings.

My Job.

This year the committee is organising “My Job” talks, with the same purpose of promoting a better understanding of different vocations in the club.

Highton Clock Tower.

A major long-term project for the committee has been the construction of a clock tower in the Highton shopping centre.  After some years of running the clock it will be passed over to the council for ongoing maintenance.
