Senior Constable Amanda Evans is this years our winner for this year

Abuse victim thanks top cop

A woman who was sexually abused by a close relative almost 40 years ago nominated this week's winner of the Police Officer of the Year Award. Senior Constable Amanda Evans.

The victim fell pregnant to her relative when she was 14 years old but only decided to report the sexual abuse three years ago.

Her relative pleaded guilty in court last week and is awaiting sentencing.

In her nomination, the woman thanked Sen-Constable Evans for her support

"Through all this time.  Amanda has been there for me to talk to even though she probably didn't have the time with other cases, sadly, occurring all the time." she said

"She still made time to talk to me and re-assure me that it (laying charges) was the right thing to do."

The woman said Sen-Constable Evans had been there to guide her through the red tape that went with investigations and court proceedings.

"I can't thank her enough for just being there for me, for doing something nice for me, like making time to talk to me, when I have needed it."

Sen-Constable Evans won the Police Officer of the Year Award on Monday night.

In her acceptance speech she said the woman who made the nomination deserved an award.

"It should be her standing up here." she said.

Sen-Constable Evans has worked in Geelong's Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Unit for the past five years.

Awards are run by the Highton Kardinia Rotary Club and recognise police officers who go beyond the call of duty.

We expect them to go beyond the call of duty but being a copper is still mostly a thankless task.

So what if they're the ones who come running in our hour of need?

So what if they're the one who clean up our tragedies?

So what if they're the ones who help keep us safe?

So what if they're the ones we tell our children to trust?

So what if they're our front line against crime?

That's what they signed up for, right?  Why make a fuss?

Because, one day it might be you who needs their help.  It might be you who needs a police officer to go the extra yard to exceed the call of duty.
