@ Treat African Grey Parrots with respect!

COMMENT: "I have just found your story by accident. Do you still have your grey? My African Grey is a 10 year old female, her name is Mellie and she talks a blue streak. I've read your story about almost loosing your bird among otther things and I must tell you and please forgive me...Please treat this bird much better than you are doing. Learn to clip her wings so that if she flies you will not loose her. Veggies and fruit are what they eat in
the jungle; there is no bird seed inthe jungle; and tying her leg to a perch is about as cruel as can be. My Mellie asks for pizza, cheese, chicken, takes a shwer with me, calls
the dog, calls me by several names and has knickname for my husband. If you have questions please write. African Greys are the most intelligent of all the parrots. The intelligence of a six year old and the emotional stability of two year olds. Mellie joins us for supper evenings. Tonight she will be having one of her favorite foods -- pasta."--Sandra/Parrot Mom, 1 May 2003 (email: [email protected])

REPLY: "Dear Sandra. Thanks for writing to me. I hope visitors to this website, who have African Grey Parrots, will write to you and seek advice in order to keep their Greys healthy all their lives. At first, I kept my Grey chained to a perch, but not for long because I bought an "instruction book" on Greys and realised its needs and wants. The book advises not to "change foods frequently" so I keep feeding it the packet foods sold by petshops which supposedly includes "all the nutrients packed into one" for Greys. This is because I am afraid it might get an upset stomach. My Grey has been with me for six years and it is doing well, God-willing. I pray that it stays that way. My Grey has become a member of my family and I don't know how we can cope without it; losing it will be like losing a family member."--Hilath, 2 May 2003

@ My African Grey Parrot

COMMENT: "Nice website. I was reading about your parrot. You need to give her a name! Maybe Lady Jane (or LJ, if you want to be cool) after King Henry VIII's third wife (Lady Jane Grey) Also, she does not just mimic you, she knows what she's saying. African Greys are very intelligent. You might want to look at the research that Irene Pepperdine has done with Alex. These birds need a lot of attention because they are so smart. Be sure to give your parrot a lot to think about, talk to her, play with her. Also, keep her wings clipped, and she will live with you for 80 years."--A friend, USA, 2 Jan 2003
