Grace Marmaduke Sharp states: "Like his kinsmen, he relinquished hisarmy position to follow the course of the Confederacy which hebelieved to be right." She also quotes from a paper in Macon:
"He was in all the important battles in the Trans-MississippiDepartment; was in the battles of Iuka and Corinth. He followed thefortunes of the army until the close of the war, which found him inMobile.
As a soldier he was cheerful, brave and humane. In the long record ofhis services, there is not a stain of either cowardice or cruelty. Theclose of the war found him broken in health and fortune."
