It is believed that Thomas Hardwick was the father of James and JosephHardwick. This Thomas appears not to have left England and is thebrother of William Hardwick (1618-1669).
William Hardwick was the first Hardwick and emigrated from Bristol,Gloucestershire, England to Maryland in 1636 at Nominy Plantation(known as Booth's Colonial Grant). By 1646 he had come into Virginia. He later returned to England. In his will of 1668 he refers to sonWilliam, daughter of Elizabeth and wife Margaret. He is buried thechurchyard of St. Jacobs in Bristol. William's descendants wereclosely allied to the Washington family both by marriage and socially.
James, in his will, leaves son Joseph the sword which "Capt. Wm.Hardwick" had given him.
In 1687 he bought plantation of Richard Sturman. Shown in NorthernNeck Grants in 1694 "Along Sturman's Hill."
[1457] Will refers to sons Joseph, Thomas, James. William was not mentionedbecause he was already dead.
