Translation
Dejan is translating the "2000 series" sermons from
Pastor Chuck Smith (of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa) into Serbian. These sermons are Pastor Chuck's systematic teaching through
the Bible, recorded weekly during Calvary Costa Mesa's Sunday night services over several years. The 2000 series has over 600 messages, spanning from Genesis to
Revelation. Dejan is currently learning the entire translation process from start to finish, but for now,
his work on this project is accomplished in two steps: transcripts and recording.
|
Transcripts
Each sermon/message has a corresponding transcript, compiled by Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa's
translation ministry. It is a two-column document, a word-for-word, written copy of the
message broken into short segments. The left column of a new transcript is English and the
right column is blank. Dejan translates the message and types it in Serbian in the right
column. Depending on the length of the message, this step requires between 8-16 hours of
work.
Recording
The next step is recording. Dejan listens to a segment in English, then follows Pastor
Chuck's tone and emphasis as he records it onto the computer in Serbian, without editing
for mistakes, long pauses, etc. (approx. 8 hours per message). This is accomplished by
using a recording/editing program called Cool Edit Pro.
He began in the Gospel of John in September 2004 during his internship at CCBC Europe,
and he is currently transcribing and recording messages from Acts.
Editing
In order to prepare the messages for use on MP3 or
radio broadcasts, the full-length messages must be edited for mistakes and dead air-space.
They are then edited into radio time-slot lengths of 24 or 54 minutes, and a radio entry-
and exit-commentary with music is added. A girl from the church in Subotica began editing
the book of John while she was still at the college, and our hope is that she will be able
to continue editing once we move to Subotica, or that Dejan
can train someone else to help with the work.
Broadcasting
When enough messages are completed, the plan is
to air them on the radio, beginning in Subotica. We have also heard there is a possibility
of getting it aired in south Serbia.
Broadcasting costs in Serbia are relatively inexpensive, approx. $50 per hour of airtime.
Meanwhile, we hope to see the project moving ahead to keep pace with the radio until it is
completed. For example, we heard that when this series was translated into Russian, the
sermons from the New Testament were completed in 5 years. Dejan is well on his way! His
goal is to have transcripts and recording completed through 1 Corinthians by the end of 2006.
