'Roofdeck' has had a fairly long life before being recorded by HBI
in May of 2001. Mark had written the music and lyrics for 'Roofdeck'
about the same time as 'Glue'. Later in the nineties, he hooked
up with a band (featuring his long-time friend and honorary HBI member,
Mary Malefyt) that played some gigs in the DC area. 'Roofdeck'
was one of the songs he brought to this band.
John attempted to make a demo for 'Roofdeck' in 1999 using a snappy drum sample he downloaded from the internet. Although the drum beat sounded good, it was too fast for the song and was ultimately scrapped. Using the Roland drum machine ("Lljjombhe"), a new drum pattern was created--Mark programmed the verse beat and John programmed the chorus beat. John could tell that this song was a special project for Mark, and that Mark had a definite "vision" for the song. So, John offered the guitar playing duty to Mark, which Mark reluctantly, but ultimately, accepted. To be fair, Mark suggested that John play bass for the song. But John declined, suggesting that 'Roofdeck' could be Mark's showpiece. Eventually, John did (at Mark's suggestion) add some acoustic guitar texturing to the choruses. The next afternoon, Mary Malefyt came over to add the violin texturing and solo. (Mary previously contributed a violin accompaniment to HBI's A Call To Action from HBI's second album Itch! in 1993.) Immediately upon completion of the song, Mark, John, and Mary went out to celebrate! |
Sitting on a roofdeck in D.C. watching the planes fly by Wondering how long it will be till you are at my side
Up above the brightest blue
And it's my dream
Ever since our chance first meeting
Sitting on a roofdeck in D.C.
And it's my dream
Are you the one that I've been waiting for
Sitting on a roofdeck in D.C.
Sitting on a roofdeck in D.C.
