Okay, here is a true story. John was staying at Mark's
apartment for the weekend to record HBI songs.
For Saturday afternoon, the plan was that
Mark was to call Mary Malefyt and let her know what
time she should come over to record the violin part
for 'Roofdeck'. Mark called her and invited her over
anytime. She agreed to be there in about 45 minutes.
After Mark got off the phone, he and John looked at
each other and said..."Well, what should we do for
the next 45 minutes?" About 45 minutes later, Mary knocked on the door. Mark and John offered to play for her their newest song. "When did you record it?" She asked. Mark replied, "Just now. We started right after I called you." If you recall from the notes for the song Grind, John was still a little sensitive to the criticism HBI received about the Itch! album being on the softer side. He wanted to be sure that there were enough high-pulse songs throughout the new album to keep the pace going. Mark's lyrics for 'I Don't Hate You Anymore' suited that goal perfectly. When John read them, he could imagine a punk-ish band (like Blink 182 or Green Day) doing a song like that. John intentionally set out to capture that style of music. It was a lot of fun and a great change of pace for HBI. |
Though you broke up with me by phone When I was paying for the call I wish to make it known I don't hold a grudge with you at all
And though the bill for our vacation
Though you ripped my heart right out
Oh sure I made all those pictures of you
And yeah I ordered all those pizzas
But all that is far behind me now
Though you ripped my heart right out ...not that I ever did
