Water Quality

Water quality is extremly important for guppy health.  Frequent water changes are essential for keeping guppies healthy and happy.  I change my water 1-2 times weekly, depending on the size of the tank.  The smaller the tank the more water changes.  When you change your guppies water, you should remove 25%-50% of their water.  When replacing the water make sure it is about the same temperature as the water the guppies are in now.  You should also check the pH, ammonia, and nitrite levels.  If the ammonia levels are high you should change 25%-50% of the water again to remove harmful ammonia.  You should also make sure your pH is around 7.0-7.2.  Most pH test kits come with pH increaser and decreaser.  Salt can be added to your guppy tanks to help prevent diseases and heal the guppies. Add one tablespoon of non iodized salt to every ten gallons of water.  Just be careful not to add too much salt.  Remember salt does not evaporate so the only way to remove it is to change the water.  Healthy water means healthy fish!
