NCTE ADOPTS POLICY TO INCLUDE LGBT ISSUES IN TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS

At the 2007 NCTE Annual Business Meeting in New York City, the Board of Directors overwhelmingly approved a "Resolution on Strengthening Teacher Knowledge of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Issues." The resolution, submitted by the Gay Straight Educators' Alliance and endorsed by both GSEA and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Academics Advisory Committee, calls on on the council to provide leadership for including GLBT issues in all teacher preparation programs.

MARCH 2009 ENGLISH JOURNAL DEDICATED TO SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER VARIANCE

Paula Ressler and Becca Chase of the Illinois State University served as guest editors for a special edition of the English Journal dealing entirely with the theme of sexual orientation and gender variance. Paula and Becca are both members of GSEA. Paula is a former chair of GSEA and a former chair and member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Academics Advisory Committee.

QUEER FOUNDATION OFFERS HOLDS ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

The Queer Foundation Effective Writing and Scholarships Program provides, nationwide, $1,000 college scholarships to outstanding LGBTQA high school students, winners of an annual essay contest to promote queer studies to improve the educational situation of queer youth. Collected, the essays form queer-the-curriculum materials for use in high schools to benefit all LGBTQA students. Scholarships enable LGBTQA youth, by means of their studies and effective writing, to contribute to building a stable future for queer youth through business/community involvement and self-directed improvement.
