Legal Issues

Disclaimer

This article is sarcasm. Although this article seems describe almost exactly how some people refuse legitimate accommodation, it is actually designed to show what not to do - barriers should be removed, not fought for. It is also part of a larger article, How to Keep Your Barriers.

Tactic Description

In many countries, many, if not all, of the tactics described in this article are illegal. But you can even turn the fact that you are violating the law into something you can use against the person asking for a barrier to be removed. You simply need to let them know that people who abuse the law (by asking for things they are legally entitled to and that you are legally obligated to provide) are the reason for the problems in your country. Talk about freeloading sonsuhbitches. Tell them that they are trying to use the threat of a lawsuit to manipulate you into following the law, which everyone knows is a horrible thing. Don't worry about the fact that you are violating the law - it is the requester who is wrong if they mention suing or prosecuting you!

Besides, it's unlikely the government will do anything and we know most disabled people can't afford a decent attorney. So you already know their threat is almost certainly a hollow one.

Note: Even disability organizations can take advantage of this general tactic - anyone who would sue a disability organization must be wrong, even if the organization is discriminating!
