SOCIAL AWARENESS THEATRE

The fact is teenagers can make wise choices about drug and alcohol usage, dieting, sexual promiscuity, and other issues pertaining to respect for one’s body. But what choices are they making? And why are they making them? “aftermath”, from the pen of a 17 year old inner-city youth, sheds light on the lives of 7 young people as they face daily choices about substance abuse, promiscuity, diet, other social issues and the inevitable consequences of the choices they make. Knowledge is power – arm you students with the power of positive choices. “aftermath” shows young people the awesome power in every choice they make. This Social Awareness Program features a live theatre production of the one-act play “aftermath” presented by Group Theatre Too* a professional New York theatre company. ‘aftermath” is a compelling and honest look into the lives of American youth brought to life by professional New York actors directed by Broadway, Film and Television veteran, Michael Blevins, yet it’s primary focus and impact is on the young audience members.

GTT’s Social Awareness Theatre program is unique in that while it promotes a healthy message regarding “respect for one’s body” it also broadens the student’s cultural awareness through exposure to professional quality theatre and the arts. Not only do students walk away with a new fresh out-look on social issues they also develop an appreciation of theatre and the performing arts as a crucial form of human experience.

The Question & Answer session, with the actors following the performance, further aids students in expressing personal, artistic, sensitive and vital responses to the social issues and artistic work of others in addition to an effective social awareness drama and cultural experience.

In addition to the excellent script the Group Theatre Too has recruited the finest artists who are accomplished on Broadway and Off-Broadway, in the classroom and have a broad knowledge of young people and the daily issues they face. The “aftermath” production features professional highly trained and experienced actors under the direction of Broadway, Film and Television veteran and long-time educator, Michael Blevins. “Aftermath” can be effectively presented in any theatre, auditorium, gymnasium, library, classroom, cafeteria, etc…provided there is a 16’x18’ playing area for the actors and seating for student spectators.

GTT’s Social Awareness Theatre program also offers additional titles for performance and include “Alky”, “Dolls” and “Splitz” wrtten by Jerome McDonough who has been hailed as “the father of young adult drama…works which question fitting in, popularity, sex, drugs, making choices, taking chances.” by the English Journal. Programs may be modified to suit specific time and event criteria and may include workshops in addition to the set program. We encourage your input into prospective programs during preliminary contacts.
