About: the one-act playhouse
MACBETH: [as he sits in his castle, planning the murder of his royal guest] If 'twere done when 'tis done, then 'twere well - It were done quickly.
TRANSLATION: [with apologies to Billy Shakespeare] For it is not only done quickly, but well!
The Group Theatre Too, LLC recognizes that the one-act play is an experimental form which shows signs of imagination, flashes of insight and interpretaive significance. A vital force . . . the one-act play is challenging our attention. GTT established The One Act Playhouse to present selections of brief sketches by some of the theater's most gifted and prolific playwrights.
These dramatic anecdotes by both classic and new authors reveal the follies and secret tragedies of thinking, feeling men and women . . . characters in action - people of life. These out-of-the-way episodes of single ideas, and deeply drawn characters in simple situations, make-up a timeless wealth of sophisticated and stylish theatre.
The One Act Playhouse promotes the preservation of classic works through productions of such timeless authors as Strindberg, Barrie, O'Neil, Gerstenberg, Middelton, Wilde, Pinski, and Glaspell while encouraging the development and production of new short works by emerging playwrights.
The One Act Playhouse Premier Performance was of Quick Curtains an evening of shorts by classic and contemporary playwrights. Quick Curtains originally opened at Manhattan's 14th Street Theater in the summer of 2007 featuring 4 one act plays; The Stronger, Six Who Pass While The Lentils Boil, A Pair of Lunatics, & aftermath. Quick Curtains, was such a success at the 14th Street it was later revived that Fall at the 78th Street Theater Lab, this time featuring an additional piece, The Pot Boiler. Future plans include evenings entitled: Half-Hours, Echos of War, Bits of Background, & More Quick Curtains.
GTT also sustains the One Act Play Site at www.OneActPlays.org a virtual manuscript library that features the full-text of classic and contemporary scripts to dozens of one-act and full-length plays.
