For this task, the students are to create a research paper based on Esperanza Rising. The parameters are completely up to you, the teacher. For some lower level classes, a three-page paper with two sources, while an advanced class may be required to do a ten-page paper with at least seven primary sources. The following description can be verbalized, or the Word file can be found right here and the PDF file can be found right here.

Throughout the novel Esperanza Rising, the negative aspects of working and living in a workers' camp were brought to light. According to the novel, the produce industry of the early nineteen hundreds was not the most accommodating to a young woman used to a life of privilege. Unfortunately for migrant workers everywhere, those conditions have not changed much over the last one hundred years. In fact, many familiar with the industry will say that the conditions have gotten worse.

In a well-organized research paper of no less than five pages, describe the conditions that the workers in Esperanza Rising faced on a daily basis. Then, describe the modern conditions of most produce camps today. Finally, compare the two eras and make a judgment as to how and why the industry has changed or has not changed over the last one hundred years.

Your research should contain at least five primary sources, which should be quoted throughout the course of your paper. Additionally, be sure to substantiate all claims with some support. For example, do not state that "it was more difficult to work in produce camps in the 1900's" unless you can provide some type of factual basis from your research to back up that claim.
