At the beginning of February, I participated in the Boy Scout Klondike Derby. The Klondike Derby is an outdoor, winter event where teams of boys pull sleds from station to station to complete tasks or demonstrate outdoor skills. This year, my troop was in charge of organizing the event. The Derby was set up a little like a treasure hunt or geocaching. Each team was given a GPS (global positioning system) and the coordinates for about 30 different hidden caches and stations. The teams had to use the GPS to locate their cache and then follow the directions from the cache to get to the next box or station. Each team had the coordinates in a different order so that one team could not just follow behind another team. At the stations, the teams earned points for completing tasks like building a fire or demonstrating first aid skills. My team made it to about 7 cache boxes and three stations. None of the teams made it to all 30 caches.
The weather that weekend was well below freezing, so we were all bundled up really tight. Even while we were hiking around it was really cold. It was even colder for the adults who were just standing around monitoring the event! At the end of the event, my sled team earned a trophy for gaining the most points at the First Aid station. I had an awesome time that day.
The homeschool group that we participate in is making a picture book for the Scholastic "Kids Are Authors" competition. My dad is the adult coordinator for the project. There are about 12 kids, from Kindergarten to 7th grade, working on the book. We still have a little more work to do before the deadline. The best entry has their book published by Scholastic Books! We have had a lot of fun working on the book, whether or not we win.
The rest of February was full of visitors and parties! My uncle and aunt from Illinois came to visit for one weekend. My grandpa came from the nursing home, too, and we had an early birthday party for Gabrielle. The next weekend, our grandparents came to stay at our house while our parents spent the weekend in Baltimore, Maryland, with friends. We celebrated Gabrielle's birthday with them while they were here. Unfortunately, on the actual day of Gabrielle's 7th birthday, she was sick with a fever and bad cough! We still had a little party at home with her, and that seemed to make her feel better! She's doing much better now and is excited to be one year older.
We started ice skating lessons again, and will continue until the end of March. Our school work, piano lessons and dance classes have kept the rest of the month busy. I can't believe February is already over! I hope you had as fun a month as we did.

Gabrielle's Grab Bag
Gabrielle turns 7!!
My birthday was at the end of February and now I am 7 years old! We actually had four birthday parties! One when my Aunt Melissa, Uncle Dean, and Grandpa Eddie came to visit, one when my grandma and poppa came to visit, one on my real birthday (when I was sick), and one the next weekend when we went to the Crayola Factory! I had a fun time! My grandma and poppa gave me two new Webkinz. They are stuffed animals and a computer game that you play on the Internet.
I also began skating lessons in February. Nicholas and I are the only ones in our class because the rest of the kids are too young. My teacher's name is Evgeniy and he skated in the Olympics. He was a pairs skater for Uzbekistan. I like going to skating lessons. I am working on skating backwards and crossing over.
In school I like math, and I love geography. I have finished the first and second grade geography books this school year! I also love to read.
