Besides the story of Jin Wang, the author also tells an old Chinese folk tale about the arrogant Monkey King who wants to be equal to the gods in heaven. In the third story, Yang uses the form of a sit-com to tell the story of Danny and his Chinese stereo-type cousin, Chin-Kee. My favorite part about this novel is how Yang combines the three radically different stories into one story at the end of the book.
Because American Born Chinese is a comic book, I thought it would be easy to understand. Boy was I wrong! I read Gene Luen Yang's blog and found out that he wanted the story of Danny and his cousin to be very offensive and not funny at all! He wanted to show people how many stereotypes exist for the Chinese and how dumb it all really is. He wanted to disprove those stereotypes.
I think the cartoon style fits this book very well. I don't think it would have been as engaging if it had been written in prose. Yang worked hard to make most of the characters very believeable and not at all "cartoony," while making Chin-Kee a caricature of all the stereotypes associated with the Chinese. I really hope that whoever reads this realizes how many prejudices exist against other races and cultures. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone under 12, but this is a great, thought-provoking, short read for everyone else!
Jin Wang wants to be a transformer. Just like his favorite toys, he wants to able to change. For Jin Wang, he wants to change from being Chinese to being American. In this graphic novel, author and artist Gene Luen Yang combines three very different stories to portray the themes of being true to yourself, and how Americans discriminate against people from other countries.
