The Captive
by Scott O'Dell
Julian Escobar only wanted to study in the seminary and become a priest in his small Spanish village. One morning he is rudely awakened by his benefactor, Don Luis. Don Luis entices Julian to travel to the New World by telling Julian he can save the souls of the natives. The Captive is the story of the journey of 16 year old Julian Escobar, as he struggles to survive hurricanes, cannibalistic natives, and other perils of the New World. Julian also struggles to decide how to react as Don Luis befalls many evils upon the natives. When Julian suddenly finds himself alone on this strange land, he faces his most difficult decisions.  Will he survive with his soul intact or will he be consumed by the powers of greed?!
Although I'm not a huge lover of Historical Fiction, I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed this book. Scott O'Dell really makes you feel for the characters and understand their struggles. If you like Historical Fiction, you will love this book. If you don't usually read Historical Fiction, I would still recommend you give this book a try. You'll find lots of action as well as a different perspective on what the Conquistadors were like when they arrived in the New World.

Original poetry by Nicholas
Autumn Sunset

Purple, pink and blue-layered clouds,
Wispy and fluffy in a darkening sky.
Orange sky where the sun goes down.

In the east where purple and pink had lay,
It melts into darkening blue.
When the sun's final rays shine
The night's rule begins.
We say good-bye to a wonderful day.

Monthly Math Challenge
The head of the Costume department for the Nutcracker has some decisions to make. She is trying to put together the costumes for the soldiers in the Battle scene.
There are black shoes, black boots and white shoes in the costume room. There are black pants and white pants along with red, gold or white jackets. The soldiers could wear red, black, gold or white hats. Each soldier could carry a musket, a sword or a trumpet. How many different costume combinations can be made with these items?

E-mail me with your answer. The first three people with the correct answer will have their names published in next month's website!
