Keys to Healthful Living The Five Keys to Good Health Altai Chi, the Master of Golden Altai, recommends the following five essential elements of healthful living. (1) Exercise to stimulate your circulation. This may be any form of exercise but the best exercise is the exercise provided by Hatha Yoga. (2) Proper breathing to absorb a good supply of oxygen to fuel the body and deliver an ample supply of Prana. (3) Relaxation for both the body and the mind. Good sleep, ample daytime rest, and meditation. (4) Natural wholesome food, preferably organic and Sattvic. (5) Clear thinking, meditation, and the cultivation of natural concentration of the mind. It is essential for you to learn to control your consumption of food. By controlling the amount of food you consume, you can contribute significantly to a long and healthy life. Over eating is one of the primary causes of disease and early death. It has been proved in study after study of the most long-lived people of the world that the most common denominator is the fact that they all eat very sparingly. So the lesson here is, if you want to live long, eat less. If you know, for example, information about beneficial nourishment, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you know what to eat. Every wild animal knows what to eat, when, and how much. Animals are able to find healing herbs and take care of their health. People need to develop this feeling again; otherwise they will never know how to eat properly and live well. The true Shaosha method contains a monthly cleansing period, with a minimum amount of food, consisting of germinated cereals and plain water for drinking. It is not necessary to exhaust yourself in this period. If you are feeling bad, weak, or dizzy, just eat some more porridge. After a month of restriction, you can carefully and gradually expand your food assortment. Learn what is beneficial for you and what is bad for you, how much you need to eat and so on. You can eat as much as you want, but avoid poisoning yourself by eating too much. There is a cycle in nature known as the “food cycle” or “food chain”. The Sun is the source of energy for all life on our planet. It nourishes the plants (the top of the food chain), which are then eaten by animals (vegetarian), which are then eaten by other animals (carnivores). The food at the top of the food chain, being directly nourished by the Sun, has the greatest life promoting properties. The food value of animal flesh is termed as “second-hand” source of nutrition, and is inferior in nature. Natural foods (fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and grains) have essential nutrients that are easily assimilated by the body. Second-hand sources are more difficult to digest, and are of less value to the body’s metabolism. Moderation, fasting, & partying for health In the case of an illness of the stomach or bad digestion, it is advisable to take food two times a day. If it is hard for you to be moderate, then it is better to enjoy more and smaller meals. If you are meditating a lot, you need some lightly digestible food every three hours to prevent distraction from feelings of hunger. Fast for 48 hours once a week. Eat nothing for 24 hours, eat something in the morning and don’t eat anything till next breakfast. A week later you can fast for 36 hours. Have a party too once a week. Between fasting days and party days there should be at least two days. During those days you can do practices in groups. Think about doing everything in a state of awareness and that everything serves a purpose, which is the striving to the highest goals.
