| Mechagodzilla is a giant robot of varying origins depending on the era. In his early incarnation, he was a cybernetic clone of Godzilla controlled by aliens in an attempt to take over the world, and in later incarnations, he was a weapon/vehicle of the Japanese military designed to combat Godzilla. Mechagodzilla's weapons and abilities vary from film to film, but usually they involve lasers from the eyes and/or mouth and missiles from various points on his body. Mechagodzilla could have easily been a rather plain creation, just a robot created in Godzilla's image for boost ticket sales (ala Mechani-Kong), but somehow each interpretation manages to make him unique and edgy. A popular creation amung fans. His first appearance was in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Godzilla rises from a volcano and begins to level Japan, seemingly returning to his destructive ways and leaving civilization in shock and horror. Anguirus appears soon after to challenge his former ally, but Godzilla brakes his jaw and the creature retreats. Godzilla continues his path of destruction until he is confronted by another monster...another Godzilla...the real Godzilla. Called into action by the ailing Anguirus, Godzilla challenges his duplicate, and reveals to the world it is actually a cyborg named Mechagodzilla. The two duke it out in a battle of flesh against metal, but Mechagodzilla emerges victorious. Suffering the wrath of Mechagodzilla's firepower, Godzilla plunges into the sea, nothing rises from it except a pool of blood. Is Godzilla dead? It appears so, but having suffered massive damages from the battle, Mechagodzilla is called back to base by it's masters, the Black Hole Aliens who intend on counquering Earth and making it their new home. The Earthlings rebel and with Godzilla seemingly out of the picture, they enlist the aid of an ancient protector, King Ceasar. Mechagodzilla is dispatched against the mighty monster, and is almost victorious over him, until Godzilla shows up, alive and well, to tip the odds into the Earth's favor. Godzilla and Ceasar combine their might to tear Mechagodzilla into scrap metal and save the planet. However it would appear that the Black Hole Aliens wouldn't give up, for the rebuilt Mechagodzilla better and stronger than ever before in 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. The aliens enlist the aid of a scientist, Dr. Mufuni, who controls an Earth monster known as Titanosaurus. Behind their backs, Mufuni decided to unleash Titanosaurus upon Tokyo, to show them his true power. Godzilla eventually emerges to challenge Titanosaurus and protect his territory. The two gargantuans clash, until the aliens decide to send out Mechagodzilla to aid Titanosaurus in his struggle against Godzilla. Faced with the odds of two against one, Godzilla didn't back down, but fought harder than before. The humans develope a weapon with the ablity to interfere with Mufuni's control over Titanosaurus, and the monster goes down, leaving just Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. As the human beings rebel against the aliens, Mechagodzilla's controls go down and Godzilla manages to defeat it once more. Mechagodzilla's legacy would continue on into the Heisei series, albiet in a different form. In 1993's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Japan forms G-Force, a military group formed specificly to counterattack Godzilla and any monster that may threaten the human race. They develope a giant areal craft called Garuda, but the ship is deemed not strong enough for the powerful force of Godzilla. Retrieving the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah from it's watery grave, G-Force uses the futuristic technology to create the ultimate counter-Godzilla superweapon, Mechagodzilla. In search of offspring Baby Godzilla, Godzilla comes ashore in Japan and Mechagodzilla is dispatched to engage him. The two do battle and Godzilla was no match for Mechagodzilla's superior weapons. However, one of Mechagodzilla's weapons backfires, resulting in Mechagodzilla going offline. Godzilla escapes and returns to his search for Baby Godzilla. Having discovered the Baby Godzilla, G-Force discovers a way to disable Godzilla and hopefully use it to their advantage. Using the Baby as bait, G-Force attempts to lure Godzilla into a trap. What they didn't count on was Baby's adopted older brother, Rodan. In an attempt to protect it's sibling, Rodan does battle with Mechagodzilla, and proptly loses, but not after taking a few systems in Mechagodzilla offline. Godzilla appears soon after, but Mechagodzilla is in no shape to fight. G-Force sends Garuda to assist Mechagodzilla, and soon the two combine into Super Mechagodzilla. Super Mechagodzilla takes aim at Godzilla's weakness, a second brain located in his hindquarters, and disable it. Godzilla goes down, and Super Mechagodzilla takes the opportunity to finish him off. With Godzilla dead and Rodan dying, Baby Godzilla witnesses his only family fade away. He screams into the night, alerting Rodan. Rodan gathers the last of his strength to fly to Godzilla and transfer his life force into the mighty creature. Godzilla arises once more, more powerful than ever. With his regained life and more powerful ablities, Godzilla destroys Super Mechagodzilla, and returns to the sea with Baby following behind him. Next Page (Kiryu) Previous Page |
