| Godzilla Gojira AKA Gigantis Monster Zero-One |
||||
| Godzilla is, obviously, who this entire site is devoted to. The self proclaimed King of the Monsters is a prehistoric beast radiated and mutated into a massive monster. His appearance is very Dinosaur-like (at least the type of Dinosaur portrayed on film pre-Jurassic Park), mostly resembling an Allosaurus. He has three rows of spiny plates on his back, which curiously link him to the Stegosaurus family too (though they only had two). His primary weapon is a burst of radioactive fire that can be released from his mouth. His special abilities have grown over the years, most of the time appearing just once when the situation called for it. He has unleashed a shockwave from his body, turned himself into a giant magnet, and has even used his radiation breath to take off into flight (don't ask). He has been portrayed in many ways, from evil beast of destruction, to anti-hero animal protecting his territory, and protector of the Earth. Godzilla's title of King of the Monsters comes from the US release of the original film, in which the statement was used as a subtitle. Over the years, this title proved to be true, and he has endured a long and healthy legacy on film spanning over 50 years. Hail to the King, baby. Godzilla's first appearance was in1954, Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Fishing boats were mysteriously burting into flames and sinking into the sea. An investigation of the incidents lead to Odo Island where the islanders feared a legendary sea dragon known as Godzilla. There was truth behind the legend, as the giant beast the islanders refered to as Godzilla came ashore for a brief stroll. Bringing news of this massive monster back to Japan, the army decides to bomb it and sends boats out to do the job. Without proof of a job well done, the boats head back into Japan, as the very much alive monster follows them out of fury. The creature surfaces on, not once, but two occasions, turning the city of Tokyo into a firey graveyard. Japan turns to an unknown scientist named Dr. Sarizawa for the key of destorying the demon, a destructive weapon called the Oxygen Destroyer, which will destroy all oxygen (whodathunkit?) in water, killing all which happen to be in the vacinity. Sarizawa initially refuses, wanting the Oxygen Destroyer to never be used, but ultimately agrees, after seeing the suffering the monster has caused. Sarizawa places the weapon at the bottom of Tokyo bay, where Godzilla rests. To ensure that nobody follows his work, Dr. Sarizawa cuts his line and activates the Oxygen Destroyer, commiting suicide and taking the destructive beast with him. But appearantly there was more than one Godzilla, for in 1955's Godzilla Raids Again, a monster bearing a strong resemblance to the creature was discovered on an island, doing battle with a massive beast called Anguirus. The fight eventually lead to Osaka, Japan, where the monsters battled brutally. Eventually Godzilla emerged as the victor, killing Anguirus and setting his corpse on fire with his radioactive breath. The new Godzilla took refuge on a small island of ice not long after, where the army attacked. Jet planes used their missles to cause an avalanche of ice, entombing the beast inside. But Godzilla was not defeated, and in 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, when the ice started melting, Godzilla was free again. The menace returns to Japan to continue it's reign of destruction, however the Japanese bring another monster to the mainland, the mighty King Kong, and lead him to a battle on Mt. Fuji in hopes of ending the terror of both beasts. The fight is butal, and the two tumble into the ocean where a rockslide supposedly traps Godzilla underwater, whild Kong surfaces and swims back to the island he came from. Godzilla surface yet again in 1964 in the film Godzilla vs. Mothra, where a powerful storm washes ashore a massive egg and the mighty monster himself. Godzilla wonders around in Japan, destroying all in his way, while Japan pleads for the aid of Mothra, the giant moth god of Infant Island. Mothra agrees, but she is dying. But she will fight the creature to her grave. Mothra confronts Godzilla, and proves to be a powerful foe for the creature. However, once Mothra's strength is used up, she lands on the ground and silently passes away, leaving Godzilla to continue his destruction. However, the moth is soon reborn as the giant egg that washed ashore hatches into two Mothra larvae. The larvae challenge Godzilla themselves, and surprisingly overpower the lizard, encasing him in a cocoon and sending him back into the sea. Next Page (Showa: Anti-Hero Era) Monster Bios |
