| Godzilla did not hide in shame after his defeat, for in 1964's Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster, Godzilla resurfaced, looking to unleash his anger on whatever came along. After a few buildings and an unfortunate cruise ship, Godzilla sighted the flying Pteranodon Rodan hovering over Tokyo. Godzilla challenged the flying reptile into a long and tiring duel. The monsters are too busy focusing on each other, that they don't notice the Earth being invaded by the evil three-headed space dragon, King Ghidorah. Humanity turns to the only monster on Earth that will understand their plight, the surviving Mothra larva (the other one died in between films). The little larva is no match for the vicious space monster, and tries to enlist Godzilla and Rodan for aid. Interupting their battle, Mothra begs their assistance, but not understanding the stakes, they refuse. Mothra challenges Ghidorah alone, and is outmatched by a severe margin. Respecting the courage of the little larva, Godzilla and Rodan decide to join the fight, and the combined might of the three beasts is enough to drive Ghidorah back into space. Godzilla and Rodan stop fighting and head out to sea, having gained a small amount of respect from humanity for saving them from annihilation. Ghidorah and Godzilla faced off again in the following year, the 1965 rematch was called Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. An alien race known as the Xillians beg the Earth to let them use Godzilla and Rodan to rid their planet of King Ghidorah, and promise a miracle cure for the Earth's deseases if they agree. Not wanting to let the promising opportunity slip by, the Earth leaders say yes. Godzilla and Rodan are transported to Planet X where they duel with the space dragon once again. They surprisingly fend off Ghidorah rather quickly, and the beast is chased off within mere minutes. However, now that the Earth's mightiest monsters are at their disposal, the Xillians show their true colors and send them back to Earth, along with the aid of King Ghidorah, to destroy the cities and to conquer mankind, under a form of mind control. The inferior beings of Earth fight back, however, and discover the aliens' weakness to sound. Using noise against them, the Xillians are defeated and Godzilla, Rodan, and Ghidorah are freed. Coming to their wits, the monsters do battle again, only to wind up at the bottom of a lake. Ghidorah is the only one that surfaces, yet Godzilla and Rodan are proven to be alive and kicking by the fact that he flies back out into space. Godzilla eventually surfaced on an island in 1966's Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, and is discovered by shipwrecked castaways on the run from an evil organization stationed on the island bent on world domination. They stumple upon the creature sleeping in a cave, and decide to use him to fight back. Using a sword as a lightning rod, they awaken the monster with electricity. The risen monster breaks out of the cave and takes on the island's inhabitants one by one, including the giant shrimp/lobster mutant Ebirah, a Giant Condor, and the army of soldiers that threaten the world. Upon taking these men out, however, an island self destruct was activated, causing the island to blow up and sink into the sea. Godzilla managed to escape just in the nick of time (as were the castaways, with the aid of Mothra, now fully adult). The King of the Monsters reappeared on another island in 1967. Son of Godzilla found the monster surfacing and protecting a recently hatched young Godzilla, named Minilla, from a group of Kamacuras, a species of giant mutated praying mantis. Godzilla kills two of them, and sends the the third flying to safery. Godzilla takes Minilla under his wing and teaches him the basics of being a monster in a human's world. But the father and son are threatened by Kumonga, a giant spider that kills the remaining Kamacuras and attacks the young offspring. Godzilla comes to the rescue, and through the combined might of the two monsters, Kumonga is set on fire by their radiation breath and burns to death. In an attempt to control the monsters, scientists create an artificial snowstorm, which sends Godzilla and Minilla into hibernation. The two fall asleep, holding each other for warmth. Made in 1968 but taking place in 1999, Destroy All Monsters finds Godzilla living in peace (well, somewhat peace) umong the other monsters on a human controlled and monitored island known as Monster Island. However, when the alien Kilaaks invade Earth, they drug Monster Islands giant inhabitants and use them to destroy cities around the globe. Godzilla is set loose on New York City. However, when the mind control is broken, he returns to Japan for final battle against the Kilaaks and leads Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, Gorosaurus, Kumonga, Baragon, Varan, and Minilla into a full on assault on King Ghidorah, which ultimatly kills the space dragon and a flaming U.F.O. known as the Fire Dragon, which is also destroyed. Godzilla and his army of monsters then destroy the Kilaak home base and kill the leaders of the evil race. Godzilla and his comrades return to Monster Island, to live out their days in peace...for now. Next Page (Showa: Defender of Earth era) Previous page |
