| In 1969, Godzilla took a walk on the lighter side outside of normal Godzilla continuity. In Godzilla's Revenge, the reformed destructor of Japan now protector of the Earth existed as a cinema icon and is portrayed in the dreams of a little child named Ichiro. Ichiro befriends Godzilla's son Minilla as Godzilla teaches them both how to stand up for themselves and fight back. Godzilla battles three Kamacuras, a Giant Condor, Ebirah, Kumonga, and a series of fighter jets, trying to influence Minilla to stand up to Monster Island's resident bully Gabara. With the aid of Ichiro, Minilla defeats Gabara, but in an attempt to not lose face by being defeated by the infant, Gabara challenges Godzilla himself. Gabara only succeeds in embarrasing himself, and stumbles back into the jungle as Godzilla still remains King of the Monsters. Back in normal continuity, 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah flashes back to the time in between Son of Godzilla and Destroy All Monsters to begin telling the tales of Godzilla that were skipped over. Earth's pollution has spawned a monster made completly of sludge, Hedorah. Hedorah attacks Japan, killing millions of inocents with his acidic touch and deadly gases. Godzilla challenges Hedorah himself, but the toxic creature is too much for Earth's mightiest monster. To rid the mankind of the menacing creature it has spawned, Godzilla teams up with the Japanese military to defeat the monster. The army uses electricity to dry Hedorah up, and Godzilla uses his bear hands to rip the monster apart. The Earth is safe (to continue to pollute, I assume), and Godzilla returns to Monster Island. But what if there was more than one Hedorah? We never found out because the next Godzilla film shifted back to the alien invasion plot. 1972's Godzilla vs. Gigan saw Godzilla sensing a recorded message from the aliens of Space Hunter Nebula M. In investigation, Godzilla and Anguirus set off to Japan only to find King Ghidorah and a cybornetic alien monster known as Gigan laying waste to the cities. While the humans take on the aliens, Godzilla and Anguirus take part in a long and brutal battle until King Ghidorah and Gigan fly back into space. The Earth safe again, Godzilla and Anguirus return home. However, the Earth would not be safe for long, for in 1973 the undersea kingdom of Seatopia attacked in Godzilla vs. Megalon. A human sized robot named Jet Jaguar flies to Monster Island to warn the beast that the Seatopian monster Megalon is attacking Japan. Jet Jaguar returns to Japan ahead of Godzilla to inexplicably grow to tremendous size and challenging the monster. But the Seatopians call their friends, the aliens of Space Hunter Nebula M, for support and they send Gigan to assist Megalon. Jet Jaguar is nearly defeated until Godzilla shows up and turns the tide of the fight. Megalon is sent back under the sea, Gigan back into space, Jet Jaguar turns back into normal size, and Godzilla returns to Monster Island to rest until his next big fight. In 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, it appeared that Godzilla returned to his disasterous ways as a Godzilla begins attacking Japan again. However, this Godzilla is proven to be an impostor, as Godzilla himself rises from the sea to challenge it. As Godzilla tears off the artificial skin piece by piece, the evil Godzilla is revealed to be Mechagodzilla, a cybernetic clone of Godzilla controled by alien Apes from the Third Planet of the Black Hole. Godzilla challenges Mechagodzilla to a bloody battle, only to be defeated and appearantly killed. But appearances can be decieving, for Godzilla resurfaces on an island and restores his strength via lighting. Mechagodzilla is soon challenged by ancient protector King Ceasar, and tries his luck against the mechanical titan. Just when all hope seems lost, Godzilla rises again to aid Ceasar and destroy his mechanical clone. When the day is one, both Godzilla and Ceasar return to their respective homes for a long rest. Godzilla's final adventure in the Showa timeline was 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. The aliens rebuild Mechagodzilla better than before, and also unleash Titanosaurus, an aquatic Dinosaur, on Japan. Godzilla resurfaces alone to challenge them both, and with the aid of several humans, he returns Titanosaurus to the bottom of the sea and destroys Mechagodzilla once and for all. Godzilla returns to Monster Island, awaiting the Kilaak invasion and the final showdown in Destroy All Monsters. Next Page (The Legend is Reborn) Previous Page |
