Nearly 100 guides and rangers from the district spent an action-packed night sleeping over at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, last year to gain their World Cultures interest badge.
Ninety-one Guides, five Rangers, and 12 supervisors, all from Roundhay, took part in activities inspired by countries and cultures from around the world. The girls arrived at the national museum of arms and armour early on Friday evening and by the following morning each one had gained their World Cultures interest badge.
A series of tasks which took them around the galleries included putting on a fashion show of costumes throughout the ages, identifying spices of the world using just smell, making Japanese Samurai-style helmets, practising the ancient art of origami, and making dream catchers inspired by native Americans. Two of girls even made their promise beneath the 16th century elephant armour.
Jane Murray, District Commissioner for Girlguiding Roundhay, said: “Not only did everybody have a fantastic time, but we also raised awareness of world cultures. The girls are already asking when they can go again”.
They were also treated to a live costumed interpretation called ‘Shell Girl’ about the life of a munitions factory worker in Barnbow during World War One. The evening ended with a showing of the film, ‘A Knight’s Tale’.
