Peregrin Took's Biography

Peregrin Took (nicknames Pippin, Pip) of the Shire was born on 1390 of the third age. He is related to Frodo Baggins distantly. He joins Frodo with Merry as one of his companions at the very beginnning of The Fellowship of the Ring while Frodo is on his way to the village Bree to meet Gandalf. From this point on he has no choice but to accompany Frodo to Bree because they are chased by the Ringwraiths set out to find the Ring from Mordor. From Bree, they are led by one of the Rangers Aragorn to Rivendell. He joins the Fellowship at Rivendell because the Fellowship needed 'people of intelligence.' He journeys as part of the Fellowship across the Mountain pass but ends up having to turn back because Saramun was bringing the mountain down on them. They take the caves of Moria as their new road. Pippin was just as much a trouble maker as he was in Hobbiton. At the gates of Moria, he disturbed a water creature by throwing stones into the river. In Moria, Pippin accidentally started the great battle in Moria by knocking a skeleton and armour down a well - the noise and comotion of it echoed all through the depths of Moria and told the Goblins of Moria and the ancient fire demon - the balrog, that there was company. After battling goblins and crossing the bridge of Kharad-dum, pursued by the balrog, Gandalf falls into shadow after fighting the fiery creature.
The Fellowship continued to Lothlorien without Gandalf and with Aragorn as their guide. They left Lothlorien a few days later and descended down the Great River in boats. At the western bank Saruman's Uruk-hai orcs from Isengard battle with the Fellowship. Pippin was captured along with Merry and the Fellowship was broken. Pippin and Merry escaped into Fangorn forest where they met Tree Beard, one of the Ents and a shepherd of the forest. The met the reincarnated Gandalf which brought them more hope. On Gandalf's orders Treebeard took Pippin and Merry deeper into the forest where they would be safe from mischief and danger. During this time they were offered the Ent's Drought, a drink which makes the trees grow taller. Pippin and Merry were the tallest hobbits in the Shire by end of the Return of the King. Pippin convinced Tree Beard to take them to the outskirts of Fangorn Forest looking out onto Isengard, after Tree Beard and the Ents had a long council about whether they should help fight Sauron. Tree Beard goes to war in Isengard with the other Ents after seeing all the trees Saruman destroyed.

After the Ents flooded Isengard, Gandalf came to Isengard and ended up with Saruman's seeing stone. Pippin, drawn to it's power, Pippin stole the seeing stone from Gandalf which angered Gandalf and he separated Pippin from Merry so that he wouldn't get up to any more mischief. Pippin was taken to Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor, where he was the smallest among all the men. He was put into service of the Steward of Gondor. When the Great War started at Minas Tirith with the orcs, Easterlings and Oliphaunts, Pippin was removed from the Steward's service and went to find help for the injured Farimir. In the houses of healing, Pippin stayed with the injured Merry, who had arrived with the help of Rohan. Pippin went to battle on a pony at Mordor with Gandalf and Aragorn who had come out of the Paths of the Dead. And there at the gates of Mordor Pippin saw the Mouth of Sauron and the Ringwraiths whom Pippin was terrified of, on their fell beasts.

After the battle ended and Frodo had completed his quest Pippin came back to Minas Tirith and met the rest of the Fellowship at last. They stayed here a few days and attended the crowning and marriage of the new King - Aragorn, and then travelled back to Rivendell to visit the elves there and went back home. Pippin went to live with Merry in Hobbiton and married Diamond of long cleeve and in 1430 Farimir, his son was born. Four years later he became the Took and Thain.

Pippin may have been the most fun-loving and michievous character at the beginning of the trilogy, but the journey had changed him miraculously. At the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, Pippin was the humorous and innocent character of the Fellowship. He knew nothing of the outside world and didn't intend at first to go adventuring. At the end of the Return of the King he is more wise, having been through all the battles and losses he endured.
